First, just let me thank everyone for the support. Now, the news

....

Bad News:

's head only grew 3.3 mm in the last 8 weeks. That's less

than I hoped for, but not totally out of the normal range for her age. It

does mean that we didn't get a growth spurt this round. I do have to say

that this surprises me. Does anyone know if kids' growth spurts take place

all at once, or does the body changes first and then the head? She's

gained back up to above 22 pounds so I’m hoping that she’ll go

up and then it’ll hit the head.

We had no improvement in her Brachy. She was 92.3 and now she's

92.4.

Good News:

I didn't have to argue very hard to keep her in the helmet

longer. Our Ortho () was willing to go with my wishes and revisit the

issue in 4 more weeks. After she recommended taking her out because the

chance of seeing more change was low, I just told her that I was hoping to

keep her in longer in case we hit a growth spurt. She said that was fine,

but that she couldn't guarantee any results. She said that since she could

see that doesn't mind it and it wouldn't hurt her to keep wearing

it, that it was no big deal. She just wanted me to understand that there

may be no additional changes. I’m so relieved that this was so easy.

Her head isn't any wider (or longer). Those numbers stayed nearly

the same (0.1 mm difference).

The circumference change seemed to go into rounding out the

head. 's head has been fairly symmetrical, but not perfect.

She had larger volume and area on her left back side than on the right

back side. During this last 8 weeks, she had a lot of growth and rounding

on the right back side so that her posterior asymmetry index is now

in the normal range. In fact, using the guide about interpreting

the STARscanner numbers for symmetry, was a 2 out of 5 for

posterior, overall, and radial symmetry index scores. Her Cranial

Vault Asymmetry Index was a 1. Now, she's a 1 for all of those areas.

See the detailed numbers below.

So, to summarize, here are her numbers

from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th scans – I don’t

have a printout of the first scan:

Width: 136.5, 138.8, and 138.9

Length: 145.5, 150.4, 150.3

Cephalic Ratio: 93.9, 92.3, 92.4 (first

scan was 95.0)

Diagonal Difference: 0.3, 2.2, 0.1

Radial Symmetry Index (goal is below 30.8):

34.9, 35.3, 28.0

Anterior Symmetry Ratio (front of head):

92.9, 95.7, 94.8

Posterior Symmetry Ratio (back of head –

goal is above 90.8): 89.8, 89.4, 92.7

Overall Symmetry Ratio (goal is above

92.7): 91.3, 92.6, 93.5

Upper Facial Symmetry Ratio: 93.8, 97.2,

97.5

Ear Offset: 7.4, 3.6, 3.0

Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index: 0.2, 1.5,

0.0

We go back for another scan on the 13th

of April. She’ll be almost 20 months old then and will have had 21 weeks

in the helmet.

Needless to say, I was disappointed in

the results, but I’m trying to focus on the changes in symmetry to stay

positive. Now that the helmet is fitting her so snuggly everywhere else, there

seems to be no where else for her to grow other than in the back. I’m

hoping that even if we only get a couple more mm, those will go towards making

her head longer.

My son is 13 months and has been in his doc band 8 weeks. He only had 2 mm of growth since we started and so far, there seems to be no change in his brachy either. I too am sad, as many other parents noticed changes in a week or so, at least noticable. We have another 8 weeks so I'm hoping we hit a growth spurt, but at that time iff not I'm going for a second band. I really hope you will get a growth spurt in your last 4 weeks!!!! I'm crossin my fingers for ya!Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: " " Date: Tue, 17 Mar 2009 08:08:54 -0400<AllAboutPlagiocephaly >; <plagiocephaly >Subject: 's Scan - mixed results First, just let me thank everyone for the support. Hey ,

I have to say that from the photos you posted of 's progress.....I am SOOOO EXCITED FOR YOU!!! I CAN SEE A MAJOR CHANGE and improvement in ....so if others are seeing it....you should be SOOOOO EXCITED!!! : )

Skye has her 7 week appt on Wed of next week. We don't get numbers at Cranial Tech and you know.....who sees those numbers but YOU anyway....right? I am always looking at Skyes head and thinking I see a change...then I put her next to her twin sis and I get discouraged. Skye will never have the same shape as her sister though....ever.....so I have to just recognize and learn to love the differences. I dont know if that is encouraging at all...just wanted you to know I understand.

I am getting ready to give them a bath...I'll shoot you some pics.....since I have been PROMISING them. : ) SORRY!!! : )

Talk soon,

Mom to Skye (17 months -- 7 weeks in DOC band)
