Deb,

Basically, a probiotic is something you take to restore normal

intestinal flora that is killed off either by antibiotics or by other

means.

You've probably heard of acidolphilus found in yogurt. Lots of

doctors recommend eating yogurt that contains live acidolphilus

cultures to help restore normal intestinal flora. Lots of women eat

yogurt to help restore vaginal flora too after treating yeast

infections (or to prevent yeast infections).

But acidolphilus is only one type of beneficial organism. There are

many others. Consumerlabs.com recommends buying a probiotic that

contains several different types, has a high " parts per billion "

count, and is kept refrigerated so the organsims stay active.

You can ask your pharmacist to recommend one. He/she should have it in

their refrigerator and it doesn't require a prescription.

I bought ours at Whole Foods. They have a refrigerator section next to

their vitamin/mineral supplement aisle. That's where they keep their

probiotics and flax seed oil.

takes a daily probiotic because he's on Zithromax. Oh, wait. I

think he ran out! Eek! I guess I need to add that to the list. We're

both out of DHA too!

Lots of people benefit by taking probiotics. For people who eat lots

of sugar or have sugar cravings, have frequent vaginal infections,

sinus infections, take antibiotics, or have digestion problems --

whether or not you have CF -- a probiotics is probably a good idea.
