Guest guest
Reuters Wednesday, June 18, 2003; Page A04 CHICAGO, June 17 -- The American Medical Association backed the use of cloning for research purposes but not to create another human being. The group's governing house of delegates passed a resolution today offering guidelines to doctors who support therapeutic cloning and who want to participate in harvesting embryonic stem cells for research. " This is really giving guidance to physicians on the science and the ethics. We can't remain silent, " said S. Goldrich, incoming chairman of the group's ethics committee, which wrote the resolution. The group, meeting here this week, sought to make clear the distinction between its support for cloning for stem cell research and its opposition to cloning to produce a copy of a human being. Therapeutic cloning involves transferring DNA to create a cluster of embryonic cells to harvest stem cells -- which are cells that have the potential to regenerate any tissue or organ in the body. Existing federal policy bans U.S. government funding for research using therapeutic cloning, and the House of Representatives voted for a ban on all forms of human cloning -- including therapeutic cloning - - for the second time earlier this year. President Bush, who permitted government funding for research on stem cell lines existing on Aug. 9, 2001, supports the House bill banning all forms of cloning. The Senate has not acted on similar legislation. © 2003 The Washington Post Company
Guest guest
That is interesting. It seems that most people don't understand our situation with our kids. I can agree for research. The only thing we have to do here is convince the government of what the research will do for us. IT seems that they just don't really understand our causes and what the research can do. Thanks for sharing. glkueker@...
