Guest guest
Hello there, I haven't had a total pencreatectomy (or, indded, any other surgery) but Sue has. She will probably post soon and she is always ready to answer questions. There are others who have had the surgery too, some with auto islet cell transplant which means that the insulin- producing ceels in the pancreas are transplanted into the portal vein in the liver where they begin to produce insulin again. The hope is to avoid or decrease in severity the diabetes which follows a total pancreatectomy. Yes, you can live without your pancreas but it is very major surgery annd carries risks in itself. I have been considering the possibility of a TP because my panc specialist/surgeon is willing to perform one for me if I wish it. I have not yet decided what to do. As it is such very major surgery, it is rarely resorted to and only a specialist could say if he or she thought you were a suitable case. It is a rare operation. I'm sure Sue, who had the operation in England, and others like Shirley and Bert, who had the op at different American hospitals, will tell you more. They have actually experienced it! Best wishes and I hope your situation improves all the time. Fliss
