Guest guest
I know I have seen this mentioned somewhere, but cannot remember where and cannot find it... Is storebought UNsweetened applesauce legal? I know some canned fruits are if they are in their own juice, so I was wondering about applesauce. Thanks! Check under snacks: http://www.pecanbread.com/recipes.html Also on the food preparation link of: www.pecanbread.com there is an entire tract on Homemade versus Storebought that explains sevral reasons why we can rarely trust commercial products. Guest guest
Lynn, You asked: <<Is storebought UNsweetened applesauce legal? I know some canned fruits are if they are in their own juice, so I was wondering about applesauce.>> No, it isn't.... sorry. The fact is, it is impossible to be 100% positive that nothing has been added to commercial applesauce (or any other canned or packaged food, for that matter). From what I understand, labeling laws permit companies to add up to 2% of something without labeling it. That *may* have changed, but used to be the case. In the case of applesauce, the process of cooking down and concentrating apples... or apple juice... and then adding a concentrate back in to the rest of the applesauce to make it sweeter... would allow them to list only apples on the label... when in fact, the concentrate has rendered the product illegal. Unless you could be there in the cannery, watching while your batch of applesauce was made, you could not ever be truly sure. There is a larger problem with increased levels of natural sorbitol in commercially made products made from apples and pears (sauces and juices)... that just happens from the increased processing and concentrating. In fact, we've recently become aware of problems with the formerly legal Dole pineapple... and don't advise using it anymore. Seems it isn't canned " in it's OWN juice " anymore... or an least one can rarely find it that way. Some SCD'ers have learned the hard way. I have yet to find any other canned fruit that is labeled " in it's OWN juice " . As with any other product, we always say that if you want to contact the manufacturer and get detailed confirmation from them of exactly how their product is made, and it satisfies you that you can absolutely trust them... and everyone who is involved with making that product... and trust them WITH YOUR CHILD'S HEALTH, then go ahead and use that product.... but be prepared to pull it if you are not seeing the results you were hoping for. And understand that we can't just generally recommend this to everyone. For one thing, manufacturers often change their recipes, formulas and production techniques without advance warning.... and frequently do this before the new labels are printed. They certainly aren't going to call you up and let you know. So you are taking a risk with every jar you open. For one person, it might not make a big difference... but for another, it could mean the failure of the entire diet. For that reason, we feel it's just safer to repeat our mantra.. " MAKE YOUR OWN, MAKE YOUR OWN, MAKE YOUR OWN " . Sadly, it's the ONLY way to be absolutely sure.
