If iron is a problem, make sure you are eating plenty of iron rich sources like

liver and quality meat, and consider introducing digestive enzymes.

Iron supplements have been shown to mainly feed pathogenic flora, and if you

are iron deficient, it is because you have flora that is eating the iron and

absorption issues from the digestive tract.

There is no way to comment on your diet, since you listed no foods. I cook

with lard and goat butter, eat avocados...I eat lots and lots of fat and

protein, bone marrow broths are very good to drink often.

I am so stressed out. I just don't know how to make this diet healthy

in so many ways--lack of calories for example. I also just don't get

iron. I know more than ever that iron supplements are bad for my boys.

But I don't know what to do to get iron in them. I read kids need 7

mg. of iron a day--getting that through diet alone seems impossible.

Am I missing something?? How can I make sure they get iron in a

healthy way?

Dearest ,

For some of us with digestive problems, enzymes cause more harm than

good. Protease inparticular can cause irritation to an already

inflamed and injured gut linning. Even Elaine knew this.

Please be careful if you go that route. Enzymes are good for some but

not meant for all. For most of us strict SCD TM will heal the gut,

and enzyems problems will vanish...and iron problems will vanish too.

It is all in the BTVC book....eat your organic liver! Hang in there

it takes time to heal!

Sincerely, Antoinette (celiac 2/06)

That's the thing--as an adult I could eat liver. But I have two boys

who won't...I could try to sneak it in (where I don't know as one

won't eat any meat except just plain shredded chicken) but I can't

sneak in enough for the 7 mg. of iron they need. I am really stressed

out about this--I know iron is important for growth (and we aren't

growing on scd...) and also for intelligence. I am starting to feel

like I am trading the trying to treat the autism for their health

otherwise.

Take heart! The rate of iron absorption is increased naturally by

increased need. Therefore, if you are iron deficient your body makes

up for it (as much as it can). Heme iron found in meats is readily

absorbable. Nonheme iron found in plants is influenced by what is

eaten with it. To increase absorption eat something with vitamin C

at the same meal (citrus, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel

sprouts, cantaloupe, kiwifruit, mustard greens, strawberries,

peppers). Avoid absorption inhibiters like tea, coffee, phosphates,

oxalates, phytates, and alkalines (antacids).

HTH!

are you having any infractions? This concerned me when I read this

part of your note. A well balanced SCDiet offers all the nutrients

that a child's body needs to heal and grow properly. Most

nutritional imbalances SCDiet takes care of.
