I have searched and I not happy with what I am finding. This is what I am using so now, but I am wondering if there’s something better: Undocumented worker – a common term referring to an immigrant or migrant who is employed without legal authorization. Guest guest
Hi Amy, The definition you are using is that of an “unauthorized” worker, someone lacking the right to work. People without work authorization may have a legal visa status, but their visa does not permit them to work -- For example, some student visas, a tourist visa or some spousal visas. Lacking work authorization is different than when people are undocumented in the sense of not having a valid visa. I agree that people throw terms around and it is hard to find good wording. If you are talking about employment then unauthorized has a somewhat better understood definition. Good luck. Guest guest
One might consider the Spanish expression " without papers " (sin papeles) which identifies the dilemma of the undocumented worker. We rely to a great extent on paper identities, when pressed, for gaining access to public services, despite greater use of the web. Those who lack papers experience our world differently; some may argue, it's plastic we use for identification, but that occurs after paper copies are authenticated of who we are, which entitles us to carry a flat portable plastic symbol of authentication. Employment is a narrow arena for what the undocumented experience everyday, when unable to gain access to what, for us, is a variety of things open to the public.
