My 11mo old (Achon) also had trouble with his infant

car seat. We had been using one of those car seats

that are rear facing only. The ortho doc suggested

getting a convertible (rear and forward facing) car

seat for him. He suggested using it rear facing for as

long as possible because of his big ol' head. When its

used rear facing it slants more. Some forward facing

seats can be used straight up or reclined.

Yes, you did. This information is not for those will babies, but for those

with children about to be out of booster seats/car seats. The US National

Safety Council says that the child cannot be put in a seat with a shoulder

belt until they are tall enough to where the shoulder belt comes across their

collarbone and does not cut into their neck. Also, I believe they say that

children should be in a booster seat until their head and neck come above the

top of the back seat. It was a while ago that I took the safety class...but

I believe all that information is correct, someone let me know if it's not.

Jo

P.S.

Since most people don't think about the correlation between the

bar/shield and injuries when they are car seat shopping...remember this -

race car drivers wear a 5 point harness and almost always walk away from the

crash...and they are going far faster than the family car. ;-)

Well, I have a question then.

My 22 month old can undo the clasp on his car seat (5pt harness, Britax

Roundabout). I have been considering getting him a booster seat that uses a

regular seat belt so he couldn't do this anymore. I like Britax so I was looking

at the Cruiser, it says 30-80lbs (good), but 3 to 6 years. Why 3 years? Would

putting

him in it at 2 be dangerous?

They make ones that don't have any age limits but I either don't like the

manufacturer or they are 5pt harnesses, which would be pointless.

Any thoughts?

Great info !

I turned my son around to face forward when he was

25# (at 6 months) cuz he *screamed* the entire time we were in the car

and his little legs were so bent up. I really had no idea about the

rest of the stuff. I've also never heard of Britax carseats....just

Evenflo, Graco, etc. Where do you find those at?

~ Aydn's silly Mama

wrote:

Here goes...remember you asked for it......children

must ride rear facing until they are at least 20 lbs AND 1 year old.

Many pediatricians (say hooray for peds again!!) will say that it

is ok to turn a baby around if they reach 20 lbs prior to one year if they

can sit up but it is very WRONG. It has nothing to do with muscular

strength; it has to do with the ossification of the vertebrae. This

information (which is apparent to the rest of the world, but not to us

in north amarica) is based on autopsy findings. In addition to this,

the baby's height is important....the baby's head should be 1-2 inches

from the top of the seat. In a typical collision the baby's head

ramps upwards and it needs the support of the car seat. It does not

matter if the baby's legs reach the back of the seat or are bent.

In a serious collision the worse that would happen is broken legs (which

I would prefer to potential decapitation (yes it has happened)! and serious

spinal injuries if the baby was forward facing prematurely).

Also as Sara was kind enough to point out....5

pt harnesses are much better that the sheild or the bar. In a typical

collision....all loose articles move forward....this includes baby's head

and chest. The shield and bar do not move forward. Baby wacks

head and/or chest into the sheild or bar causing potentially life threatening

injuries. The harness should also be on snugly. There should

be no more than a finger or two between child and harness. The child

should not be padded....technically some say that the child should not

even have a coat on (never mind blankets) because the force of a collision

would compress the fluffy clothing and provide too much slack (I just put

the harness on tightly in the winter... is used to it). It is

also best to use a car seat with a tether strap (not yet manditory in the

US). A rear facing tether is a very good idea also. When installed...the

car seat should only mo! ve a maximum of 1-2 inches. Preferably it

shouldnt move at all.

For us Canadians the weight restrictions for

rear facing car seats does not exceed 22lbs. So if you happen to

have a big baby (as I do), technically you are supposed to turn the car

seat around. However, Britax is now availlable in Canada....the manufacturer

says that the car seat is exactly the same as the US which allows

rear facing up to 30 lbs. The problem is that in Canada they only

test car seats using a 22 lb dummy....they dont test with the 35 lb dummy...obviously

the Canadian officials dont think that big babies exist.

There are other car seats that allow for rear facing past 22 lbs...I

just cant recall who they are right now (sorry).

Car seats should not be second hand unless you are absolutely

sure about the history (ie not in any crashes), and car seats do have an

expiry date.

Geez....did I forget anything???

PS As for Shelby's problem...Im not sure what to do about

your little Houdini....I havent researched booster seats as in depth as

I have the car seat stuff. Ill look around. They may say 3

years because of weight and height restrictions.....but Im not sure what

they really should be. Maybe a different car seat with a different

type of latch would help.....its expensive but Im not sure what else to

suggest....wow.

I am usually an avid by the book carseat user, but I will say that I had my

son facing forward at about 10 months. He is extremely tall for his age and

his legs were not just bent, they would have touched his chin. What can you

do in that case? I wasn't going to make him suffer. Don't get me wrong...I

totally agree with you, but what do you think is better?

We have the gorilla car seat for Maddie (hate that name). It holds

occupants up to 120 pounds (course, she's still a peanut, but I wanted

something to last). It costs $640, but I got $500 of that through FDSS

funds. I am going to be registering for new funds for the year '01 and

was thinking of getting that stroller???? MaClaren, it's called I

think???? Anybody here have it?? What's your opinion? We didn't bring a

stroller when we went to DW last week, intending to just rent at the park.

Problem was that we had to take a bus to each park from our hotel and waiting

in those bus lines with our little princess was absolutely BRUTAL to poor

Duff. So I called the hotel and they delivered a stroller I rented from

downtown Disney. Made ALL the difference. Maddie is still so hard to

contain and small that I think we'll make use of a stroller for a while.

Here I am responding to my own post....LOL But I wanted to add that we do

have a great coach. One of those three wheelers (joggers). My SIL had

bought it for us because Maddie was getting bigger and sticking her foot down

and stopping the wheels on regular strollers. The three wheelers are nice

because she can't do that. However, they are BIG and not compact, and so we

just couldn't bring it with us!!

Donna,

We got the Convaid stroller for . I don't remember exactly why I

liked it better than the McClaren. I think it was because we were looking

for a more " all terrain " type of stroller that we could take camping and for

hikes. The Convaid is available with the bigger wheels for that. The down

side is that it costs about $1900. We were able to get Regional Center

(state) funds and CCS (Calif. Childrens Services) to pay for it.

An alternative to a car seat (if funding is not available, since they are so

expensive) is the harness they use on the school buses. Our school district

gave me the number of the local distributor and they can be purchased for

about $100.00. They are sized to fit the child and anchor to the frame of

your car.

I have always thought it was until they are 20 pounds. I switched both

my children at around 17

pounds. I had bought a Britax and it was quite a bit more for a rear

facing seat. But I have

found the Britax to be the best car seat I have ever seen. As far as a

booster goes I am looking

for one too and again the Britax has a really nice one but more

expensive than any others I have

looked at. On their web site they do have a " special needs " car seat

but, I think it was like

$400.00 They tell you where you can find them also. Hope this helps.

Amy, et.al.,

I was reading in this months Consumer Guide Report that the Britax

was recalled. Something about failing to protect the child in a

crash. You might want to contact the company to find out more.

My daughter is almost 11 and still uses hers at all times, including in

friend's cars... SHE HAS NOT BEEN TEASED ABOUT IT...

I also insist that she uses one on school field trips. The law here allows

school buses not to use seat belts, and her arms are too short to brace

herself during sudden moves. I was glad I followed my instinct with that

when I found out her bus stopped suddenly when the road was blocked by a

power pole...a lot of the kids got banged around. What is more important

than keeping your child safe? It's not a matter of being hard to keep them

in them...You just tell them it's the law.

<< I don't care what the law says it is going to be hard to keep our lp

children in car seats as they get older - 8... 12....15 yrs old and still in

get?? >>
