i thought the boston band was an active band. it is only shaved where we want growth. are you sure that it is passive? From: <nwilkens2275@...>Subject: Re: Any good results with a passive helmet???Plagiocephaly Date: Monday, March 9, 2009, 11:02 AM

If the Boston Band is passive, than it is not like the STARBand, which is definitely an active band. Orthomerica does make one or two passive bands I believe, in their STARLight line, but the STARBand where the foams is shaved out is an active band.

I paid cash for it and it was only $1500 cash! That sounds like a great deal compared to what I've seen on here. The othonics place (O & P) is well known it my area and seem to not have any negative feedback here. I was surprised that it was a passive helmet because I don't remember that ever being talked about on here. Does any one have positive expeirences with passive helmets? I have also just posted pictures of my little one ( Rose), the picture does not show how mis-aligned her ears are though. Thanks! Dawn

This is pasted from my orthotist below. "The helmet is passive in that it is not compressing his skull, but instead we are giving the flat area room to grow and keeping pressure off of it. The Star Band is made by Orthomerica, who makes several different style helmets, and is the same type of helmet as the Boston Band, it is just made by another company."It is the kind that is custom to the shape and shaved out. Sorry for the confusion. From: Levin Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 09:12:04 -0700 (PDT)<Plagiocephaly >Subject: boston band i thought the boston band was an active band. it is only shaved where we want growth. are you sure that it is passive? From: <nwilkens2275 >Subject: Re: Any good results with a passive helmet???Plagiocephaly Date: Monday, March 9, 2009, 11:02 AM If the Boston Band is passive, than it is not like the STARBand, which is definitely an active band. My daughter had a Boston Band and I am pretty sure I remember a conversation

with both Dr. as well as with the orthotist in waltham where they both

said that it is an active band.

The DOCBand or STARBand (or any other " active " band) does not " compress " the

skull. You can't push the skull back into place (i.e. the protruding forehead),

you can only hold it in place so it does't get worse and promote growth on the

other side to balance it out. So I don't like the word " compress " at all. But

otherwise, active bands also give the flat area room to grow and keep pressure

off it as well. I do think orthos use passive and active differently, so who

knows. But if he believes that the other brands literally compress the skull,

then he's dead wrong.
