Guest guest
Charlene, you said: > ... the 5-ASA's don't seem to have a good track record. I am new to anti-inflammatories. My son has recently been put on Mesalamine, which is Pentasa (compounded in pure water to avoid his many allergens). I would like to learn more about these drugs. He's been on Mesalamine for 16 days, and during that time the only change we've seen is increased stools - he now has 4 or 5 small, pellety poops throughout the day, and usually one large soft one. He used to have just one med-large soft or firm poop per day (his stools all became undigested 1 month after starting SCD). Can you expand on the reasons Elaine preferred sulfasalazine? What is Salofalk? Do you know if they can be compounded? Thanks! Suzanne Tom, ASD, SCD 93 days
Guest guest
Suzanne (that's my sister's name ) Elaine preferred Sulphasalazine to 5-ASA's because, now I am no doctor or biochemist so forgive me if I don't use all the right terms, its the sulpha that tricks the bacteria into thinking that it's iron and then the bacteria binds itself to the sulpha. In 5-ASA's the sulpha has been removed. Now that being said, sulpha can be a very sensitive thing to take. I tried it, even weaned on it really slow as per Dr. Present's intructions but it was really bad for me. I felt horrible after taking it. Like someone had beat me up with a crow bar in the gut. I was on Asacol, tried the sulphasalazine, then went back on Asacol. Ended up in hospital and the Asacol did not work(came out whole) so my doc switched me to Salofalk (5-ASA) and I have been on it ever since. It seems to work for me and out of all the 5-ASA's I think, anecdotally it has the best track record. Here is the link; http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/azulfidine_and_asacol.\ htm Hope this helps you. Charlene UC 8 years SCD 5 1/2 years > > I am new to anti-inflammatories.
