Guest guest
It is a relatively simple procedure used to look at the ducts and sphincters of the pancreas. A measurement of the sphincter can be taken and this is called manometry. A normal pressure should be 15 or less. If the pressure is too high the doctor can loosen up the sphincter with a little; this is call a sphinterotomy and my put in a small stent to keep it open. The stent will stay in place for about 3 weeks until it migrates out on its own with a BM. Most stents do; there are some different types used. You will be told to not have any thing by mouth for several hours before the procedure. When they take you back to get ready you will need to remove your clothing but you canstill keep on your underware. A nurse will come in a put an IV line in and may draw some blood samples too. Some ercp are done under concious sedation, that is when the patiet is awake but really doesn't care. Versed is a drug of choice for that because it has a very good amnesthiac effect..you wont remember much. Some ercp are done under MAC which is Monitored Anesthia Control, There will be an anesthesiolgy and a nurse anestetist to sedate you. You will need to lie on your stomach. Most ercps take less then 30 minutes and they can also take pictures of the pancreas and ducts while they are in there. Sometimes people stay over night and sometimes people get to go home. Make sure you have somebody to drive you. I hope this helps
