My almost ten-yr-old has never been able to swallow pills (probably never will

be able) and has been on various meds that she's had to take daily... for long

periods of time. I've always (whenever possible) requested either capsules or

tablets... then I open the capsule or grind up the tablet, and mix the result

into applesauce, mashed banana or something pureed to a similar consistancy. I

guess I'm sort of making my own suspension... fresh daily. LOL

This may not be entirely free of all starches/fillers... but at least there is

no sugar, Nutrasweet or artificial colors and flavors. To be honest, I would

never be able to afford to have her already very expensive seizure meds

compounded (as it is, the one she's on now is $350 a month... only partly

covered by ins!).

Getting SCD-legal liquid suspensions of medicines

My son will be going on antibiotics long-term for Lyme Disease and cannot

take pills or capsules. The commercial premade versions of Amoxicillin and

Zithromax for liquid suspenstion have artificial color, artificial

bubblegum flavor, sucrose, and I know not what else in it. Has anyone on

the list gotten a compounding pharmacy to make a SCD-legal suspension? Do

you think it's worth it? If it were a short course for an acute illness

such as strep throat I probably wouldn't bother, but this will be for a

long time. Or could I just add digestive enzymes and hope that they won't

interfere with the antibiotics?

Thanks for any advice,

beginner)

Patti,

Thank you, I hadn't thought of that since the prescription is written for

liquid suspension. I already open capsules of digestive enzymes to mix

with his food, so I could certainly do the same with antibiotic

capsules. As it is, I found a compounding pharmacy that will make

SCD-legal liquid suspension (not covered by by my pharmacy plan of course),

but I will see if they can do capsules when I refill it.
