Hi~

We had our 1 week check-up after getting our Starband last friday. Already we are having good results with measurements! My questions is that he drilled holes in the band to help with the sweating. It made me worry a little afterwards, but our orthotist seems very knowledgable and has been doing bands for a while. What do you mean the areas that just cover the flat areas? He drilled them in the back. It just made my heart skip a beat when you mentioned the head start to grow out the holes. Where does the band hold pressure in the prominent areas? The holes are in the back, but isn't that were the head grows too? Just wondering...

Thanks

Re: First Day In A Sweaty Helmet

If they haven't already, they can drill some air holes in the StarBand, just be sure they only drill them in the parts of the band that cover the flat areas of the head, not the prominent. Drilling holes in the prominent areas where the band is holding with pressure can cause the head to start growing out of the holes (he'll have little bumps on his head where the holes are). It should get a little better once his body adjusts to the extra heat. But it is likely to continue through the summer. My son has been sweatier since it's gotten hotter and I just take his band off in the middle of the day to dry it and his head before replacing it. His flat spot is the back right and he does have some right forhead bossing. However, he drilled the holes across the whole back of the helmet in three rows. Starting with 3 holes, then 5 holes, then 5 holes. The holes do go over more to the right however they are some on the left side as well. Now I am worried....I should have never had him do it. It's not even that I asked I never knew they could do that. He offered and said they do it durring the summer time sometimes. I just hope I didn't agree and now it could possible cause a problem. I had to pay for the helmet out of our pocket and it was such a road to even get the prescription. He seems knowledgable

about them though....so I'm assuming he's drilled the holes before and there was no problems. I go back in in 2 weeks and I guess I can voice my concerns then. Do you think he drilled the holes right? I am deffinitely worried!

Re: First Day In A Sweaty Helmet

OK, this is just an example, since I'm not sure of Aiden's exact head shape. But say for instance Aiden's flat spot is on the back right side of his head. Typically this means there is forehead bossing on the right side of the forehead. His "flat" areas (where there would be space between his head and the foam to allow it grow more symmetrically) would be the BACK RIGHT of his head (where the flat spot is) and the FRONT LEFT of his forehead (the side opposite the bossing). The "prominent" areas would be the areas being held in place by the band (the head would be in direct contact with the foam). In this example, the prominent areas would be the BACK LEFT of the head (the side opposite the flat spot) and the FRONT RIGHT of the forehead (where the bossing is). If there is no forehead bossing, I believe the helmet would hold all across his forehead evenly and therefore the only flat area where

holes should be drilled would be the back right where the flat spot is. Are Aiden's holes all across the back, or only to one side? And is it the side with the flat spot?Jake-21m (tort resolved/rt plagio/DOCBand #2 1 week)Jordan-4> >> > Well yesterday was the big day, we got our STARband! Dylan did > really > > great. Hi ~

Ok that makes me feel better to hear that someone else had holes across the back of the starband and it was ok. I had not read anything about holes yet...so it caughter me off guard when he said he could do that. Then I was mad that I had him do it if it could cause problems. He has mostly brachy and only slight right plagio. Do you think that is why the holes are across the whole back? So my next question is...Will the head ever grow to touch the back of the band with brachy? Did your daughter's head with brachy ever grow to touch the back of the band or is treatment done before that happens? His head has already gained some length so I am excited! I am sooo happy that we are doing this. I will just ask about the holes at our next visit. I find that I always have so many questions to ask. Thankyou.

P.S I am going to post a pic of Aiden in his new band...he looks so cute!

Re: First Day In A Sweaty Helmet

Hi Amy,the holes should be in the part of the band where there is lots ofroom - not the part touching the head. My daughter had brachy (flat inback) and had holes across the whole back. You don't want the baby'shead pushing against the holes. So long as that is not happening youare fine. Don't worry, if you find there is a problem then they'llmake you a new band for free (they almost always do if they have madea mistake). Just ask your ortho about it when you go for your next visit. When our ortho first drilled the holes I asked about this and heassured me that her head would not grow all to touch the part of theband where the holes were. He even showed me how with a pencil eraseryou could poke the hole and see there was a lot of room before you gotto her head.-christinesydney 2 yrs starband grad> > >> > > Well yesterday was the big day, we got our STARband! Hi ~

I added some pics of Aiden in his Starband (i thought under the A file) but I think I did it wrong. So if someone knows how they can change it or let me know how to change it.

Thanks

Hi ~

Yes, his starband does shift alot. I didn't think anything of it b/c the ortho said that it would and it was ok as long as it did not fall off. I will have to made sure it stays at the brow line. But when I lay him down for naps and night time it shifts around. I will have to ask about that too. He didn't say anything about it at our last appt.

Thanks

Re: First Day In A Sweaty Helmet

Hi,Aiden is very cute. Does his starband shift a lot? In the firstpicture it is sitting right at his brow line (where it should). In thesecond picture it looks quite a bit higher. You want it to hit atabout the brows if he has forehead bossing. If it is usually in theright place it is probably okay, but if it moves a lot you should askyour ortho. His big sis is also cute.-christinesydney 2.5 yrs starband grad> > > >> > > > Well yesterday was the big day, we got our STARband! Dylan did > > > really > > > > great.
