Guest guest
O.K. We finally bit the bullet and started on the diet 7 days ago. Unfortunately, my computer has been down so I've got several questions. * I got an Apple Juice that says 100% organic, no sugar or preservatives added and is pasteurized. We called this local company to verify that nothing was added and they confirmed. It is cloudy with apple bits in it. Is this considered cider? Is it legal? * We've only had Welch's grape juice...are other juices o.k. if we haven't intoduced them as individual foods? For instance - we haven't had oranges, can we have orange juice? Same question for condiments - can we have homemade ketchup if we haven't intro'd tomatos? * We did the intro. for 2 days ( has never had D, just mushy stool) then added bananas, almond flour (for muffins & pancakes), and today green beans. Since he's never had D I'm not sure what I'm looking for in a reaction. If he were to react to a food would he have D or other symptoms? Also, at what point should I see complete improvement in his stool? * Does every food need to be introduced 1 at a time or is it mainly fruits and vegetables? I'm feeling the need for other meat besides boiled chicken and broiled hamburger - but I've been adding things like bananas and green beans to stay balanced. Do people tend to have reactions to meat? * Why is it o.k. to cook with onion and celery, but not eat them? If you puree those foods can they be eaten? * Last one - has eaten VERY well on the diet. Do I need to restrict, let's say, the # of pancakes if he's eaten a well balanced diet the rest of the day. He's eaten everything so far but seems hungry. I feel like we're eating tons of eggs, bananas, and carrots. Are we o.k. with that?
Guest guest
You asked: <<* I got an Apple Juice that says 100% organic, no sugar or preservatives added and is pasteurized. Is it legal?>> If all they've done is pressed the juice out and heated it to pasteurize, then capped it, it sounds fine. Obviously, they haven't filtered it or anything. By Elaine's guidelines, I think it's good. Remember to dilute! <<* We've only had Welch's grape juice...are other juices o.k. if we haven't intoduced them as individual foods? For instance - we haven't had oranges, can we have orange juice? Same question for condiments - can we have homemade ketchup if we haven't intro'd tomatos?>> Hmmm.... well, by introducing orange juice, you are introducing oranges. Ketchup... you are introducing tomatoes. Thing is, the OJ is better in the beginning, b/c more of the fiber is removed... easier to digest than an orange. You're past intro... so OJ and ketchup are okee-dokee. <<* We did the intro. for 2 days ( has never had D, just mushy stool) then added bananas, almond flour (for muffins & pancakes), and today green beans. If he were to react to a food would he have D or other symptoms?>> Have you seen any improvement in his stool yet? <<Also, at what point should I see complete improvement in his stool?>> Everyone is different. That's just impossible for us to predict. Depends on the extent of damage to his gut. <<* Does every food need to be introduced 1 at a time or is it mainly fruits and vegetables? Do people tend to have reactions to meat?>> The only reason we say one new food at a time is so you'll know what's doing what. If a child's stool was better, then suddenly loose or back to mushy, whatever the issue was.... then you have to guess as to which food you need to pull back. Unless you have a highly sensitive kid with lots of food intolerances, I'm thinking go ahead and try some different meats. Just keep a journal of what he's eating and observe him.... watch for general trends. <<* Why is it o.k. to cook with onion and celery, but not eat them? If you puree those foods can they be eaten?>> It's the fiber. Not for brand-new newbies. I would think onions, well boiled, then pureed, would be easier to digest than celery. Celery is realllllly fibrous, even after cooking. <<* Last one - has eaten VERY well on the diet. I feel like we're eating tons of eggs, bananas, and carrots. Are we o.k. with that?>> This is pretty common. Some new SCD kids are REALLY ravenous.... bottomless pits. It's almost like their body's are saying " Oh, FINALLY... some REAL nutrients that I can actually digest and absorb! HALLELUIA!! " They're making up for lost time. I wouldn't worry about limiting him, unless he was self-limiting to ONLY wanting to eat one particular food, or unless you were seeing some other negative. His appetite will probably even out after a while. Patti
