Reporting in a Russian journal, researchers in Moscow showed that supplemental

therapy using pulsed electric current or low-intensity laser radiation gave

improved recovery in patients with acute pancreatitis compared to treatment with

medicinal therapy alone. Laser therapy was performed using 2 arrays of 20

semiconductor lasers each which were applied to the front and back of the

patients. Electric stimulation was performed using an " Electronica ChANS-2M "

apparatus, which generates low-frequency bipolar electric pulses. Interestingly,

for the mild and moderate forms of the disease, the laser treatment alone was

more effective than the laser + electric treatment, while for the severe form of

the disease the best results were achieved in the laser + electric treatment

group. [bENER 13824]

July 28, 1999 - Dr. Pretidev Ramdawon (Centre of Energy Medicine & Anti-Stress

Therapy) I have achieved very good results in the treatment of pancreatitis with

the application of bio-electrotherapy in combination with low level laser

therapy. This method has been developed by me already since 1994. It is a great

method of treatment for pancreatitis which will find wide application in medical

practice in the near future. I have read the comments of Mr. Kumar and I totally

disagree with him. If more blood flows through an inflammed organ, it does not

necessarily worsen this organ's state. On the other hand, a larger volume of

blood flow through the diseased organ helps to fight the disease with increased

oxygenation, increased supply of nutrients and increased immunological and

defensive support through more blood. The other thing is that biostimulation

electrotherapy has got anti-inflammatory regimens of influence which helps the

pancreas to lose its inflammation. Low level laser therapy has also got an

anti-inflammatory effect as well as other effects. It should be remembered that

a larger blood flow will harm an organ only in case this blood becomes stagnant

in the concerned organ and causes oedema. Otherwise, I fully agree with the

patient who got relief in his case with the TENS unit. Diseases of other organs

can be treated successfully with the combined method named above, including the

liver, gall bladder, vertebral column, stomach, intestines, urinary bladder,

prostrate gland, etc. With my best wishes, Dr. Pretidev Ramdawon, M.D., Ph.D.,

January 03, 1999 - Landis I am not a doctor, and I have very little idea

of the idea behind this treatment of pancreatitis however, I suffered from

recurrent acute pancreatitis from age 8 to age 17. My doctors refused to

prescribe any painkillers because they believed it was in some way psychosomatic

despite the evidence from the bloodwork, however, my chiropractor used a TENS

machine which I believe uses similar principles to those described above, and

this treatment helped the pain dramatically. As I mentioned, I have no medical

training, so I can't comment on the biological ramifications of this technique,

but it greatly improved my quality of life and reduced the pain.

April 20, 1997 - P. Kumar, Blackpool I do not know how you came across

this idea of treatment. In any case, it is a novel approach. Although, I have

doubts regarding its mechanism of action. If it happens to cause an increase in

the blood flow to the pancreas, then I think it should make pancreatitis worse

as already too much blood is flowing through the organ. On the other hand, if it

decreases the blood supply, than naturally it will halt the healing process.

Pancreatitis is a very complex illness and this modality of treatment is too

vague. I do not see forsee any future for this kind of treatment.
