Guest guest
Dear friends - Greetings from Rutledge U. Gimme an R! Gimme a U! Gimme a...I'm too tired to finish that cheer... We had a lovely dinner together on Tuesday night at the Cattleman steak house, which I reported on that night, and then.... I got all my preop stuff done, and went over to Durham Regional on Wednesday morning, bright and early, to go under the knife. It seemed to go much quicker this time, perhaps because I'd already had a dry run. Dr. Rutledge came in to my preop room around 8, and talked with my husband and me. Spoke proudly of all of you, and how miraculous he finds this MGB list. I agree completely! There has never been anything like you folks, in my experience. He spoke of how much he learns from this list. Then I went by gurney to the holding area, where they tried to stump me with more questions - but I knew what to say by then. Name, rank and serial number only! I was a woman on a mission, and nothing would stop me! I got a lot of questions about this latex allergy, from preop right down to the anesthesiologist. I think my earlier attempt at surgery did not go unnoticed... Dr. Rutledge obliged my request for music by singing TV show theme songs. I recall falling asleep to the strains of " Meet the Flintstones " . I don't remember waking up in the recovery room at all, just in my room, groaning and asking for ice chips. I WAS SO THIRSTY!!! The ice chips tasted like heaven to me. (One of my nurses this morning did a humorous - but fairly accurate - imitation of me calling out " Ice chips....zzzzzzzzz. " Haha...I'm going to let her have the surgery, and then we'll see who's laughing! My husband was a major rock throughout, feeding ice chips, saying nice things, etc. Some nice MGBers stopped by or called, including Gloria from Chapel Hill, Tricia Bardell, Susie from NJ, and I think some others stopped by but I might have still been groaning or snoozing. I felt like hell when I woke up - I was pretty sore. The pain meds pump was a real help - just enough to help me to relax. I did throw up a couple of times, but it may have been from the Demerol. My nausea wasn't prolonged - just a couple of bouts, several hours apart. I think that that's my standard reaction to surgery. I got up to go to the bathroom, and realized each time how much better I felt when I moved around. Since I had slept most of the day, I cruised around the halls between midnight and 5, and I think it helped me to get rid of the gas, thus making me more comfortable. I went back to sleep around 5, and woke up just before Dr. Rutledge came in, around 7 - we chatted briefly, he told me he was happy with the surgery, and that my liver looked fine. Yay! I visited with Susie, Dawn Jester, (from IL), and her darling mom Deb, with - didn't get to see Dave again. All were doing fine, up and cruising too. We're going to try to do a movie together this weekend - if you're in Durham and you're reading this, email me! Right now it's 4:30 in the afternoon - I took a long nap back at Duke Tower after having the yogurt, creatine, glutamine, Vitamin A, etc. casserole. Quite a little concoction there! I feel a little tired - okay, a lot - but I think I'm going to feel better tomorrow. It's too early really to report on my drinking and eating - I will say that I feel very cautious about drinking anything too fast. It goes down and hits that new stomach like a rock! Thanks to every single one of you, for helping me get to this moment. You are such a blessing to me. More later... xoxo Blair
