Guest guest
Helen, GAPS is a different diet than SCD. Many feel it " is " SCD... with improvements. Unfortunately, this particular listserve was set up to support the original, traditional SCD, and really needs to continue doing that at this point. So, to answer your question, no... SCD itself has not " broadened out " to include GAPS. In many ways, the CONCEPTS behind SCD seem to be present in GAPS.... and honestly, not having read the book myself, I can't compare the two fairly. I'm not sure that would be appropriate on this list anyway. It might be a good diet, but pecanbread has not.... at this point, anyway.... become an SCD/GAPS list. Hopefully, there are other lists out there that discuss GAPS. I know Jody is reading the book right now but the bottom-line " approval " of any new additions or " improvements " to the original SCD (trademarked by Elaine Gottschall) has to come from Elaine's daughter, who holds all the rights to SCD. Patti GAPS diet what do you think? Hi All, I have not been online for a while and am just coming back to SCD with my son. Does anyone have any feedback on the GAPs diet by Dr Natasha McBride. She came to speak at the MINDD conference in Sydney Australia and has got quite a few purcharing her book to follow the GAPS diet basically SCD but with some variations particularly in the biokult probiotics don't need to be refrigerated in very high doses and lots of strains, not so much yoghurt but heaps of fermented foods and kefir also much less cakes and lots of meat fats. That's what I heard anyway. I remember some discussion on this some months ago, and was surprised when my biomed doctor has recommended it now for my son and other children. She also has her child on it too. What do you think of it compared to straight SCD, as that is what I would prefer to come back to or has SCD broadened out now to include this GAPS diet?? Guest guest
Dr. praises SCD but suggests some protocols that do not comply with the original SCD. There are also differences in our permitted fermented foods and what Kefir can be made of. On SCD Kefir is for advanced use. Mimi posted excellent suggestions yesterday for the most effective ways to follow SCD and cautioned against early and excessive use of nuts and nut flour baked goods. Sorry, Helen but we swear by our yogurt for those who are able to tolerate it as it really seems to help with brain and gut function. SCD has not been " broadened " beyond the autism adjustments although some people continue to monkey with it. It is not mandatory to include all legal SCD foods in the diet but balance and variety are recommended. Elaine wanted us to strive for a well rounded diet. > Hi All, > I have not been online for a while and am just coming back to SCD with > my son. Guest guest
I have personaly read the book by Dr. Haas that Elaine quotes in BTVC. He was the originator of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, and after much testing and experimenting back in the 30's he came up with a very good way to heal sick kids with gut problems. The problem with GAPS is that she adds probiotics and things that they have already discovered from long ago that do not work. She claims that Bifidus is OK. You see Dr. Haas and Elaine learned that Bifidus, although a good gut guy in normal numbers...when the gut falls into a vicious cycle, especially with our young children, this good guys become to high in numbers and becomes a bad guy. If you take more of it by supplementing with what Elaine would call " illegal " probiotics, this little bit of a change in SCD ruins the rate of success of the SCD TM diet. Hope this helps our concerns with changes to SCD TM, Antoinette (celiac) and mother to KiKi (autistic celiac) SCD 2/
Guest guest
The very " improvements " in this GAPS book, is causing people to not have SCD TM success. Although GAPS explains things very well to why people suffer from psychological and neurological issues because of the vicious cycle. Yet, I would be very leery of any suggestions that go against what Elaine told us. If you read BTVC book you will see the contradictions. The biggest " infraction " that Gaps suggest is the use of Bifiidus, this is illegal in the SCD TM diet and can cause serious problems in breaking the vicious cycle. Elaine did much research in this area, please do search to see why Elaine said this, on her web site. I personally would stick with what has worked for 60 years.
