Guest guest
Carefirst BlueCross Blue Shield (DC/VA/MD metro area) has denied coverage for our daughter's DOC bands. My company's insurance broker is preparing to file a case with the Insurance Commissioner. I'm looking for a copy of the letter from Lang, FDA, dated April 11, 2000 on Dynamic Orthotic Cranioplasty Not Investigational. I've seen it referenced in other appeal letters, but can't find the actual letter. Does anyone have a copy of it or link to it? FYI - Our daugher finished her second band a few weeks ago and went from 14 mm Cranial Vaulty Asymmetry to 5 mm! And from 6 mm Skull-base Asymmetry to 2 mm. We used Cranial Technologies in ndale, VA and they were fantastic.
Guest guest
I don't want to completely discourage you, but that is my insurance company (although my daughter is under my spouse's insurance). Dr. Travato at Kennedy Krieger (who was our specialist) told me at our appointment that we were lucky that she wasn't under my insurance because she has never had a successful case of Carefirst MD approving the helmet. If you succeed in your appeal, let me know. , mom to , 18.5 months 16 weeks in STARband plus CST land Seeking copy of Letter from M. Guest guest
The first helmet that Maysa got was from Eastern Cranial Affiliates in Arlington, VA and although at first they told us that insurance wouldn't cover it, CareFirst BCBS paid $1875 out of the $2900. Our experience with ECA was bad though and we then got her in a DOC band from ndale, VA. By that time, we had switched to Kaiser and they paid both DOC bands in full. I don't see why BCBS would cover the helmet from ECA and not the one from CT... Guest guest
That's very interesting. We never tried it personally because was no longer under my insurance by then. It was just something that the doctor told us. For a while, we had her double covered. Under both Carefirst and MDIPA, but we found that the insurance companies were getting confused and wanted to fight over who would pay what so we discontinued the double coverage when my insurance was renewed on September 1st. MDIPA would cover the helmet, but they would only cover Hanger. Because we didn't want to wait any longer and because the STARband had been recommended by our specialist, we didn't do more than call them to find out a timeline for getting her started. When I found it it'd probably be another month, we just decided to pay out of pocket. It was worth the 2800 dollars. If she had been several months younger, we probably would have at least met with Hanger before deciding. , mom to , 18.5 months 16.5 weeks in STARband plus CST land Seeking copy of Letter from M.
