Guest guest
My rheumy put me on folic acid every day, then added Leucovorin (10 mgs) every Wednesday (the day after chemo). If I remember correctly, the metho affects the shape and size of the red blood cells. Before the Leucovorin my RBC were not maturing properly, hence the Leucovorin which does counteract some of the effects of the methotrexate having to do with cell formation. It is NOT negating the effects of the chemo itself, just the production of the RBC.s. Does this make sense? Love, Judy Re: Rheumy visit today outcome Sharyn, Your dr sounds wonderful. It sure sounds like he's on the righttrack. He is doing everything that he should be. The blood work, the officevisits, explaination of Methotrexate, etc. sounds like you are in goodhands.Did he put you on folic acid with the metho? This seems to help with theside effects. There seems to be some controversary about it though. I thinkthe majority of us on it took Folic acid. Some drs. say it counteracts themetho. Might want some feed back from the group on this. The metho made me really tired and nauseated until i finally adjusted. Thinkthis is a common side effect. It is a chemo drug. If you work you mightwant to start the drug on a Friday so you will have the weekend to recoup. Idon't work and I was taking it on Friday, but it messed up my whole weekendso I switched to Sunday night so I would be sick on Monday. LOL Everyone hasto work out their own schedule.Good luck and glad to hear that they are finally doing something. If youwant more information on Methotrexate, you will find it on any drug site. Ifyou can't let me know and I will send it to you.hugs
Guest guest
Folic Acid stops you from ending up with Pernicious Anemia--- this is where the bone marrow can't make red blood cells. PA is a serious life threatening side effect of immunosuppressants. I'll send more info on it later. There are many B vitamins-- but Folic Acid (B12) is the most important. IT is the one they put women on when we're pregnant. Subject: hello allTo: Neurosarcoidosis Date: Sunday, May 17, 2009, 3:46 PM Good evening. Can anyone tell me the benefits of Folic-Acid? I just got my prescriptions filled and was looking everything up again and I can only find it helpful in anemia (SP). I checked in my lab and with the Iron I take I am not in danger of anemia. Can anyone help. I know you are all busy and sick so it is no hurry for this. Thank you Jackie

Guest guest
Hi, Sorry if I'm repeating something already said, I did not follow all the posts on this. For anyone taking methotrexate it's very important to take Folic Acid, it prevents fever blisters. Guest guest
I want to thank those who answered me about folic acid. I do take Methotrexate so now I understand more. Also the article sent in this email was quite helpful. Again Thank you very much. Jackie Folic acid Here is an excellant article on B9-- (I was wrong, it isn't the same as B12) FOLIC ACID. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folic_acid If the medical terminology is confusing, ask us, we'll try to decipher.
