Guest guest
Are you saying that you take the helmet off several times during the day? I find myself so afraid to take it off. I am so worried that he will grow the minute I take it off. I know it is crazy but it worries me. How many times do you take it off and for how long? missy From: anadashmaria@... <anadashmaria@...>Subject: Re: Re: Red SpotsPlagiocephaly Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 8:04 AM Just to chime in about the red spots. I gave my son a bath last night and because he has eczama and a new red spot that looked to be on the precipice of being a blister I put oatmeal in his bath and rubbed it all over him and the put Desonide lotion on his entire head and face. That is an Rx for eczema and basically a steroid creme. I think this helped soothe him and keep his scalp from flaring up. Also as far as how long to keep it on I swear dr said average of 21 hours and the orthotist 23 or the other way around but they weren't consistent. I don't think its a huge deal and we give 1 hour beaks when he wakes up and 1 before bed and 2 or 3 15 min during tummy time or eating to break it up. To compare it to diaper rash (as your ortho did) seams a little harsher to me than general heat rash. I think of diaper rash as more painful, heat rash just seems like red skin in comparison, not as much moisture as heat being the problem. I would probably check with your ortho about the hydrocortizone cream just to be sure before using it (I wouldn't want it to sting or anything). Also, if your daycare is comfortable with taking the band off and on, maybe they could take it off a couple of times a day to wipe his head down and let the sideburn area dry. If they keep it to 15 minutes or less each time (it really should only take about 5), you still have a half hour at night to give him his bath. Guest guest
At least 3 during the day plus the am/PM breaks. Think about the rate of bone growth. I would avoid having the baby flat on his back during off time. Also I can't imagine how a 4 month old can wear this. A 6 month old has enough of a hard time and he's just a bobblehead during yummy time so we have to take it off. Its a peasonal decision. I don't want people to be upset about it. For example I plan to take it off for 4 hours during a playdate and probably won't give him more than an AM break that day. Its once in the entire month so I feel ok with it. Guest guest
The goal for us is as close to 24 hours as possible, but 22+ is more practical most of the time. We were instructed to take off the helmet to giver her head a breather at every diaper change and then for an hour to scrub down the helmet (and her) and give it enough time to dry completely. We don't follow the every diaper change rule, but we will give her a few breathers over and above the cleaning hour. (When she's been sick we were instructed to leave the helmet off for a significant amount of time). The more it's on, the more effective it will be, but 23+ hours isn't always practical and that's OK. As long as you're constantly striving to get as close to 24 hours as possible and within reason, you're going to get good results. Guest guest
Our starband ortho told us she needed to wear it at least 20 hours a day, but more is better. Most people do 23, but sometimes break up the 1 hour off (30 mins and 30 mins). We usually did 1 hour off, but towards the end (month 5) we took it off for a few parties. We were tired of explaining it :-) -christine sydney, 3 yrs, starband grad > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > My son got his helmet about a week ago, and he's getting pretty bad red spots in his side-burn area.
