I am copying an old post of mine for Angie and other list members who

want to improve their results with SCD.

HTH,Mimi

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please use caution with peanut butter, many SCD adults report problems with

peanut butter. You may add it when digestive problems have resolved

but watch carefully that there are no changes after adding this

food. Peanuts affect the thyroid. PEANUT BUTTER SEEMS TO BE ONE OF

THE MAJOR REASON FOR FAILURE WITH SCD.

Many children cannot digest nuts during the early phase of the

diet, some children may never tolerate them. If you did not do the

intro diet then you may consider removing nuts for a while and

observe if there are improvements. Carefully watch for any reactions

when nuts are consumed again. Do not over consume the nuts.

Supplements:

I once counseled the mother of a child who had the most horrible GI

symptoms. After the mother removed a supplement, the child's problem

was resolved. You might need to remove all supplements and

reintroduce them one at a time. Many children cannot tolerate any

supplements in a capsule. You may need to open the capsule for them.

Some pills are a medical necessity, please use good judgement and a

compound pharmacy to make them SCD legal if they contain illegal

fillers.

Avocados and olives are great foods for kids. Look for olives that

contain no additives in the health food store.

Enzymes:

While enzymes are not part of the original SCD protocol, some

parents feel that " SCD plus enzymes " is a great combination.

However, there are some children who cannot tolerate enzymes. You are

the expert on your child; there is no substitute for careful

observation.

Yogurt brings fantastic results. Do not miss it's magic. Yes,most

kids with autism can tolerate it after a length of time on the diet.

Start out with 1/8 of a teaspoon and increase gradually. If you see

any die off reaction that you do not want, decrease the amount of

yogurt.

For some children, the die off reaction might be a runny

nose,irritability,worsening of digestive issues....

Avoid the difficult to digest foods. Cashews, dried fruit, whole

nuts, beans, lentils and peanut butter are advanced foods and should

only be tried several months after GI healing has taken place. Some

folks report problems with carrots. Young carrots that are well

cooked might be less problematic.

Please start out with the intro diet and gradually introduce new

foods and watch carefully for any reactions. Many parents skip the

intro diet and jump right in and get wonderful results. If you are

one of these parents please consider restarting the diet;you will

get even better results! I understand that many parents cannot

restart the diet because they are overwhelmed by all

the other therapies, but please remember that the real SCD will

improve the results from the other therapies.

If you did not follow this introduction to SCD,then you are not

doing the real SCD. The real SCD means that your child is only

eating foods that he can tolerate,if he cannot tolerate a certain

SCD legal food then he will not get the full benefit of SCD.

If you are a new parent and the intro diet seems to be

daunting, should you go back to GFCF? No, many parents report getting

great results with just eliminating starches, sugar and the most

advanced SCD foods. Try using SCD foods that are not too advanced

but remember that you might not be getting the full advantage of

SCD. However, your child will learn to like veggies and other

nutritious foods and you might have an easier time, restarting SCD in

a few months.

Chelation is not part of the classical SCD protocol but we welcome

parents who are doing chelation. Parents who do chelation must do

SCD because many forms of chelation are extremely hard on the GI

system. Please be aware that the damage to the stomach from

chelation may sometimes prevent gut healing. If you do not see

progress with SCD,then please take a chelation break and discontinue

chelation for several months. Many parents report that they get

better results with chelation after doing SCD. Some parents report

that they get better results with SCD without DMSA.

Watch out for infractions. Make the avoidance of infractions the

goal of your life. You have to remember that autism/GI damage is a

major condition. If your child had a major illness then you would

agree to put your child in a hospital for an extended stay. There

is no excuse if the doctors promise a great improvement. If you

have a child who fights SCD,then confine him to activities where he

will be safe from toxic foods.

Please avoid ready made foods even if their ingredient list appears

to be SCD compliant. Hidden additives, especially sugar, are very

common in the food industry, even with organic foods.

If you did not do the intro diet and want to report a non positive

outcome with SCD on other list serves, then please explain to other

parents that you did not do the intro diet and that there is a

possibility that your child's progress was stalled by a food that

your child cannot tolerate or digest well.

This also applies to any other deviation from the protocol mentioned

on this post. Parents who do not follow our protocol are also not

eligible to compare SCD to other new diets.

Here is our list protocol from a long time ago:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/35899

This was written by Elaine and Mimi.

1)Eat only food that is allowed on the diet, only using food that the

child can tolerate and digest.

Some of these permitted foods should be introduced carefully to

determine if, at the beginning, the child can tolerate the food and

in

what amount.

2)Use probiotics and/or yogurt.Goat yogurt is the official yogurt of

this list.

3)Vitamins from Freeda as written in BTVC or from another SCD legal

brand. A vitamin without added fillers such as cornstarch, glucose,

fructose, sucrose, sorbitol, etc. Cellulose, although added

cellulose

is not a good idea, is permitted. Vitamin producers need some kind

of

filler and cellulose is the least objectionable.

Optional

4)Enzymes if you do not good results with the above protocol

5)B12 shots(but highly recommended)

A few extra points from Sheila.

6. Those who do the intro diet even for a day or two seem to get

better long term results.

7. A food journal is very helpful to determine if there are any

reactions to new foods, supplements etc

8. Slowly add new foods. This is difficult to do but really makes a

difference in the long run.

9. When posting to the list, it is really helpful if people remember

to say what they have, how long on the diet, and if appropriate what

supplements they are giving their kids.

10. That people use the other resources available to them. Such as

www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and www.scdrecipe.com

These are two fantastic sites filled with tons of information. The

recipe site is so very inspiring of all the great things that can

eventually be done with this diet. And as always in any

discrepancies

between recipes and the book. BTVC gets the final word.

Mimi's addition:

If doing the intro diet is too hard for your child, just start the

diet. You can always go back to the intro diet later. My addition was

approved by Elaine.

Elaine approved this protocol YOGURT PROTOCOL

The following protocol is for a child who has been dairy free prior

to

SCD or for a typical child with extreme milk sensitivity and GI

problems.

THIS IS IMPORTANT

Step1

Try dairy free SCD for at least several weeks prior to the

introduction of the yogurt, this gives the gut a chance to heal

Another reason to wait is that we have had several ASD kids who get

a

bad initial reaction to SCD( even on the dairy free version of SCD).

So it is wise to wait for a few weeks before introducing goat dairy

products. In doing so you can decide if the bad initial reaction is

due

to a yeast die off caused by the elimination of malabsorped carbs or

a

reaction to dairy products.

Step2

After you get good results with SCD and you do not have any more

yeast

die-off you may start to try the goat yogurt.

That goat yogurt must be made with the right GOAT yogurt starter.

Goat yogurt or sheep yogurt are recommended for children who were

dairy free before starting SCD. For these children we endorse

goat/SCD

as the official diet of this list.

Some ASD children are able to tolerate cow yogurt. If you do try cow

yogurt, introduce it very slowly. If you do try cow yogurt and you

get

bad results it is not our responsibility. If you post about bad

results

with cow yogurt, please make it clear that you were using cow yogurt

and that it is not the official diet of this list.

It is critically important to follow this protocol. This gives you

the

best chance for success with your child

\

Once yogurt is tolerated, give 1-3 cups a day.

ALMOND AND OTHER NUT FLOUR SCHEDULE

Elaine wrote this protocol.

[Nut flours are not required on this diet.If you cannot tolerate

almond flour use another nut flour.]

After the intro diet, introduce the almond flour or pecan flour

muffins very gradually - the first week, none.

The second week, about 1/4 muffin every other day and increase to

one

a day if all goes well.

After that , you can go to about 3 per day.

NOTE:Many ASD children have difficulty tolerating almond flour.Try

other nut flours instead
