Wandering Night Helmet

my son Spencer has been wearing his helmet for about 4 weeks now and

sleeping in it of a night for about 2 weeks. He has Brachy and it does

slip a little during the day but that is easily adjustable and our

ortho said to just keep adjusting it, because it is not slipping a lot.

But night time it is a different story. The last few nights I have

woken to Spencer crying because the helmet is coming off completly. Not

sure if it is slipping off or if he is pushing it off, because I am

asleep myself. Have been in his room while Spencer is asleep and have

noticed him trying to scratch the side of his head, but of course the

helmet is in the way. Not sure what we can do about the helmet coming

off.

Cheers,

Hi Alison-

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for your problem. It doesn't

sound like the helmet should be that loose that it can just be

pushed off or slip off. Does it have a velcro strap closure like

most of the ones we use here in the States? Are you seeing results

with it? I would be concerned that it is coming off on it's own like

that, but I'm not sure what can be done, aside from possibly getting

a new helmet. But if you're seeing results, maybe there's nothing to

do? I really don't know. If you were here I would say definitely,

get another helmet, that's not right. But I'm just not sure what

your options are in your area. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Please keep us posted.

Good luck!

Hi ,

Thanks for your reply. Spencer's helmet is a locally made helmet, it has the velcro strap at the side, but that is still done up when I go in of a morning. About a week ago Spencer whacked his head rather hard on the floor (thank-goodness for the helmet) and I wonder if somehow the helmet was damaged. I cant see any physical damage but maybe I dont have the eye to see it. Spencer has been wearing his helmet for 5 weeks now and we are already seeing results. I guess the best thing is that Spencer is not sitting up, so he is spending less and less time on his back.

Cheers,

Hi Alison-

It sounds like if it seems to be working and you're seeing results,

there doesn't seem to be anything to do to keep it on at night. It

didn't occur to me at first but maybe it has to do with the fact

that he has brachy. I'm thinking maybe the helmet has a lot of room

in the back to allow for the head growth and that might be why it's

coming off (as opposed to plagio which would only be open on one

side and still holding in place on the other). Maybe once his head

rounds out some more it won't come off as easily. At least I hope!

Good luck and please keep us posted!

My son has this same problem. He's almost 7 months now and has been

wearing his helmet for plagiocephaly for about 3 1/2 months. When I

check on him during the night his helmet is fine and then when we get

up in the morning, he starts to scoot around in his crib a lot and I

often find him twirling it on his arm or around his leg! I've asked

my dr about this our last few visits, and he has assured me that this

is a good sign. It means the child's head is shifting and changing,

which is what we want, so the helmet will constantly need adjusting.

My dr has also added 2 little tabs that he has pasted onto the bottom

corners of his helmet to help it stay a little snugger while still

giving him room to grow. I hope this helps!

Hi ,

Soon found out the reason why the helmet is coming off. Spencer is sticking his thumbs underneath the sides of the helmet and pushing it up and off. It takes a bit of effort, but he can push it off. The good thing is that I just keep putting it back on, sohopefully he will get the message that he needs to keep it on.

Cheers
