Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm 's mommy. I haven't posted here much since came out of his helmet but I still lurk alot. was born at 36 weeks by c-section and at first had a perfectly round beautiful head. By 6 or 7 weeks we started noticing that his head was a little flat in the back, but honestly I didn't think anything of it. At his 2 month doctors appt I asked our ped about it almost as an afterthought, and she seemed way more concerned about it than I expected and recommended we see go to the plagio clinic at our local children's hospital. Of course I was wracked with guilt thinking I had screwed up my child by not giving him enough tummy time and not recognizing how severe his deformity was. I called that day and they couldn't get us in for 3 months! My husband and I are both in the medical field and he actually works at that hospital, so he pulled some strings and they fit us in a month and a half. So over the course of the next 1 1/2 months we worked on tummy time and tried aggressive repositioning and his flat spot continued to get worse. When we went for his eval, they confirmed that he had severe brachy (CI was 98%) with slight right plagio. He had significant frontal bossing with a big bump on the right side of his forehead. We were sent to the local Hanger shop to be fitted for a helmet (at this time I had no idea that there were any other options for helmets). I ended up being very pleased with our experience with Hanger- they were very professional and thorough and our orthotist was wonderful. Our insurance covered slightly over half of the cost which was helpful. So went into his hanger helmet at just over 4 months of age and he did great with it! Honestly it was so much easier and went so much better than I thought it would. We were so lucky that he tolerated it well; he never had any rashes or skin issues and it didn't disrupt his sleep at all. We saw results so quickly. Its been a while so I don't remember the exact numbers but by his first measurements his CI had gone down to like 92 or 94%, and the lump on his right forehead had diminished significantly. By three months in the helmet the results were slowing plus he was about to outgrow it- there was hardly any foam left on the forehead. At 7 1/2 months old and after 3 1/2 months in the helmet, we decided to call it a day. 's CI got down to 84%, his assymetry and frontal bossing resolved completely and he looked like a different kid! His head looks so much more proportioned now. Of course its still not perfect but we're happy with the way he looks and its normal enough that no one really notices except for me. has been out of his helmet since the end of January. He's now almost 14 months old and is doing great! We're newly pregnant with #2 now and I'm crossing my fingers that we can avoid this whole issue with our next baby. As a side note, about 3 1/2 months old we started letting sleep on his tummy. Not because of the brachy, because the poor kid couldn't sleep more than an hour at time on his back ever. I knew the risk of sids was higher but he was SO miserable since he just couldn't sleep. Once I put him down on his tummy he immediately started sleeping 11 hours every night, getting up maybe once. He was like a new baby after that- happier, eating better. I was so worried about how he would do with tummy sleeping and the helmet, but it was never an issue at all. , mom to , 14 months Brachy, Hanger grad 1/08 > > Hi everyone! > > Please welcome our newest Front Page Star, ALEX!
