SUMMARY

The presentation

will cover the experience of working with the Global Influenza Program at WHO

in Geneva

during the height of the 2009 H1N1 (Swine flu) influenza pandemic. A review

of the “pearls learned” from the H1N1 pandemic will be presented and will be

compared to recent outbreaks of H5N1 (Avian flu). The presentation will

conclude with “lessons learned and future concerns” related to inevitable

influenza pandemics to come.

LEARNING

OBJECTIVES

1.

The participant will learn about how the WHO and CDC worked together to

rapidly prepare and distribute H1N1 vaccine world wide.

2. The participant will be taught the differences between

H1N1 and H5N1 and the most serious complications of these influenza viruses.

3. The participant will be able to recognize the

differences in the “high risk groups” identified during the H1N1 pandemic

compared to the “typical seasonal influenza”.
