Just want to say that in our case the bulging didn't go away. When Maysa was in her first helmet (a passive helmet from Eastern Cranial Affiliates), I started noticing her head grow wider right above the ears where it should have stayed put. I brought that up to her orthotist attention who also said that it was water build up. It wasn't. Her head grew over 1 cm in width and made everything worse. We wasted 3.5 months in that helmet. That is our experience only and if it feels hard like bone, like it did in Maysa's case, and if it noticeable to you, I would get better answers.

Ever since Maysa got in a DOC band, she hasn't grown one mm on the sides and I can tell. She's been growing in the right direction and we are glad that we made the switch, but she is still wider right between her ears and her temples where her head should be narrowing and that will always be there. Here is a post showing how wide she grew on the sides: http://mymaysa.wordpress.com/2009/01/06/the-three-reports/

This happens to a lot of children wearing bands. It is just fluid build up. Think of how you wear a pair of socks and when you take them off there is a ridge in your leg afterwards. It is the same thing, just more noticeable because the band is worn longer. It will go away once the baby graduates from the band.

My son also has this happening and it is pretty noticable. He saw the ortho a week ago and he said it is nothing to worry about and it will even out after the helmet is removed. I too would appreciate any responses if this has happened to any one elses child.

My son Connor has been in his helmet now for almost two weeks. Yesterday when giving him his bath I noticed something that really has me worried. In the areas right above his ears, he has bulging, it feels hard like bone and not fluid. There is a little space above the ears on the helmet, but not much. Could growth be occuring here because there is some open space and will this be permanent. I hate to think wearing the helmet is making his head worse because he did not have this bulging before, and it is worse on the side where he does not have the flattening. He has plagio with pretty bad ear assymetry. I have seen a little improvement on the flat side, and I think he's had a minor growth spurt since wearing the helmet. We do see the ortho on Tuesday, I'll just be a nervous wreck till then and wonder if I should still have him wear it??Kate
