Guest guest
Hi Tull, I was really interested in your last post about TP without auto islet cell transplant. I am considering that operation at the moment. What Dr Sutherland says seems to coincide exactly with what my own panc surgeon/specialist told me. He said most patients can cope well with their diabetes after the TP (without ICT) but there is a small risk of developing " brittle " diabetes. He said exactly the same things as Dr S about the pain issues as well. I was wondering whether the degree of " brittleness " depended on whether or not one was already diabetic before the surgery, but my surgeon didn't mention this (I forgot to ask him directly but will e- mail him to check it out again) and from what you say, Dr Sutherland didn't mention it as an issue either. My main reason for contemplating the operation is to prevent the possibility of pancreatic cancer as I am in a very high risk group. (I have lifelong hereditary pancreatitis and am now 57.) Did Dr Sutherland mention anything about this? My panc specialist said that my pain levels/frequency at the moment were not quite as bad as those he normally sees in patients to whom he offers the TP (because I am still working and eating etc.) but my cancer risk was so high that he was willing to perform the operation if I wished. Your post was so informative and the most balanced information on this matter that I've seen on a board yet! Thank you very much Tull. Best wishes, Fliss
