Guest guest
Hi all, My surgery went well. Dr. R had 9 people to do that day (last Wednesday, 8/2) and I was number 8, so I had to wait around until around 5:00 pm, when I finally was wheeled into the operating room. I knew I would probably have to wait, so it wasn't too bad, and my husband was with me the whole time, even in pre-op. He also spent the night after the surgery with me in my room. In pre-op they had a very hard time getting my IV started. The first person who tried got it into a vein, but then said it wouldn't thread, so he had to stop, and he had to leave, so no one tried again for a while, and then when they decided to try again it was because I was supposed to go into surgery in just a minute or two! So that meant they had to hurry, which was NOT good. So I had two people trying, one on each arm. I was getting a little upset and asking them to please try one at a time so that I wouldn't have to be stuck any more than necessary, but they just said that they had to get a line in, which I realized, of course, but I really didn't want extra sticks! They also kept looking at the inside of my wrist for a vein, and I told them that I would faint if they tried there, and they said that would be all right because they were going to knock me out in a minute anyway. That did NOT reassure me! So they were both doing it at the same time which meant I had a total (counting the very first try) of four numbing sticks (they do numb the area first) and three sticks to get an IV in. I've had worse times with IV's (and better!), but I think it was the rushing that worried me the most. After the first one failed, I wish they had just kept trying then, rather than waiting until they had to hurry, because I laid there for probably over a half an hour with no one trying at all. My surgery took 38 minutes. Dr. R said I have a " fatty liver " which means it is really a good thing that I had the surgery because weight loss will probably take care of the liver problem, and that way I should avoid future liver failure. I had a lot of pain for a few hours after the surgery, but by 11:00 pm I was up walking around the halls and felt pretty good. I left the hospital at 11:00 am the next morning. Dr. R took the staples out on Tuesday at clinic. That doesn't hurt at all; you can hardly feel it. At that point I had lost 8 pounds. I haven't had any nausea. I was worried about that because Dr. R said for me not to use the patch for it because I sometimes have fairly low blood pressure, and the patch can lower it more. I feel tired sometimes. Otherwise I feel fine, unless I don't get enough fluid or salt, in which case I feel lightheaded. I just have a little soreness around my incisions. If I feel hungry, a few teaspoons fills me up. I do have an emotional desire for food a few times a day, but that usually passes in a few minutes. We got home on Tuesday evening and one of my cats had kittens a few hours later. She had been staying with my Mom because we knew she was due around then, but she waited until a few minutes after my Mom brought her back to our house, and then she went into labor and had three sweet little kitties. So after getting up early, going to clinic, and driving another 7-8 hours home, I had to stay up to make sure the kittens were born safely. I mention all this because I think that I was probably actually less tired after all of this than I would have been if it had all happened before I had the MGB. So I am very pleased with how I am feeling. I would love to hear from my littermates, and the others who had the surgery that week. How are you all doing? I loved meeting you all. I really appreciate coming to visit me in the hospital. Thanks ! Good luck to all of you working toward the MGB. I am so glad that I did it! If anyone needs a contact, I will be glad to help you out, although I am a very new post-op. Sara MGB 8/
