Take a day's supply of any meds you take to your surgeon. He will

tell you which ones you need to split, which ones you need to crush,

etc due to the size of the stoma they will have to pass through.

Not only that, any time-released meds you take will have to be

changed; they leave your system before they can be released. I had

to change Glucotrol XL to glipizide ER and Zyban to Wellbutrin.

My B-12, Hemacyte (iron) and biotin are small enough to swallow. My

surgeon instructs to take 4 Pepcid Complete (chewable) for calcium

(2 hrs apart from iron - they block each other) and a chewable or

liquid multivitimin (I do Centrium chewable). Chewables are more

readily absorbed from the time you begin to chew them. The portion

of the stomach that absorbs nutrients is severed.

As far as splitting or crushing a multivitamin, ask your surgeon. I

just went with the instructions given to me.

Dear Pat,

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but assuming you've had the

RNY (stop me now if I'm wrong), Pepcid Complete is not a good source of

calcium for you. As post-op RNY patients we need to be taking calcium

citrate. Pepcid Complete is calcium carbonate which we don't absorb.

Also, you mentioned swallowing your b-12, that it's a small pill. The

only way we absorb B-12 is sublingually (holding it under your tongue

until it melts) or through injections. Hope this helps.

live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...
