thinking about going on liquid diet

I'm having my first flare, and I am having major D with a lot of frequency. The

last couple days when I have eaten something, I get fevers. I stated a liquid

diet yesterday and am going to my GI today to talk about getting my next

Remicade infusion sooner.

In the meantime, I have heard that liquid diets can induce remission, but all

the liquid diets are non SCD. I tried doing the intro diet last week, but that

didn't seem to do much. I'm kind of at a loss.

How bad would it be for me if I were to do the non SCD drinks until I

(hopefully) reached remission and then start back up on SCD afterwards? Or is

there any SCD liquid diet I can follow? Right now I'm only eating broth, juice

and gelatin. I can't imagine staying on it for too long without really missing

out on nutrients and protein.

Thanks,

Amber

Amber,You might try making the broth and puree everything you eat in it to make a savory soup. For example, just puree the broth and the chicken until smooth and sip whenever you are hungry. You can add cooked veggies too. I personally don't recommend the commercial liquid diets for the reason you stated plus the taste is horrible and you are still putting something in your body (usually synthetic nutrients) that your gut must process in some way. S. boulardii is supposed to help with D, have you considered it?AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Mon, January 25, 2010 7:42:59 AMSubject: thinking about going on liquid diet

It would be detrimental to any healing that has taken place!!!!

The last time I went into a bad flare, I did a liquid diet but it was SCD. I

worked full time so I started this on a Friday. Day 1: sipped chicken broth

only, ate homemade gelatin (1/2 welch's grape juice, 1/2 water or 1/2 OJ, 1/2

water), drank fresh steeped ginger tea. Day 2: pureed the veggies back into the

broth and sipped that, gelatin, ginger tea. Day 3: pureed the chicken back into

the broth/veggies, gelatin, ginger tea. Day 4: i ate some chicken on the side of

the other stuff and did ok. Day 5: added an egg. I had to take things super

slow, but it worked really well.

Amber,

After my cancer surgery (uterine, not colon, but my guts were really

unhappy, having been moved around), I was on clear liquids for several

days, then my doc said I could have thick liquids, and then soft

foods.

I made the thick liquids by pureeing / blending meat or hard boiled eggs,

homemade broth, and whatever well-cooked vegetable I chose. For me, when

my guts are upset, that's usually peeled, cooked zucchini. (When I

started SCD, I ate zucchini as my vegetable for several months because I

did not tolerate anything else -- if I tried anything else, it came

through undigested.)

Are you taking any probiotics?

Have you been keeping a food diary?

Amber,

I'm sorry you're having a flare! During my last flare I did 2 or 3 days with

just fresh juices. I made the juice myself and diluted it with water. The main

one I used was a combination of cabbage and strawberry because I'd recently

learned about how good cabbage juice was for my UC (I've read it's good for CD

as well). I think doing that more than anything else helped me get my system

back on track (and of course it was all SCD legal). Plus I was still getting

nutrient from fresh fruits and veggies and increasing my water intake - all good

things. After 2 or 3 days I was ready to have solid food again and in fact

hungry for it. I'd try doing something like that before a non SCD liquid diet

(which most likely relies on sugar-filled concoctions).

I hope you feel better soon!

I think you could probably formulate an SCD liquid diet that's very nutritious and very easy to digest at the same time. Homemade juices would be good, if you have a juicer. You could have a lot of broth and maybe blend some raw egg yolks into it like they do on the GAPS intro. You could even make Marilyn's savory smoothies if you feel you need more substance. Even though it wouldn't be a 100% 'liquid' diet, I think your body should have a pretty easy time digesting anything that's drinkable! I don't really know about the non SCD liquid diets, but I imagine the drinks are loaded with a bunch of junk to make them taste good. If it's anything like the Ensure I had to drink, anyways. Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I'm not sure what to do. I went to my GI

yesterday and completely forgot to ask him. He just wanted me to get my infusion

sooner, which was fine with me.

I have noticed though that whenever I eat solid foods lately, I get a fever. I'm

assuming it's from the inflammation. I'm praying that the Remicade still works,

because I don't want to miss any more work.

I will take your suggestions in mind. Right now the thought of pureed chicken

makes me ill, so I've just been having juice and gelatin. I really hope I get

out of this flare. I'm really worried it may take me a long time to get out of

it. :(
