Guest guest
Amber When I first started SCD I was on a clear liquid diet due to the severity of my symptoms, and had been on liquids for 8 months (with the occasional cracker or spoon of mashed potato which didn't help which is why I ended up trying SCD). Frequently during the first two years on SCD I'd have to fall back to a liquid diet for a day or two before I moved slowly back to solid foods again, which all depended on my symptoms. I still go back to clear liquids on occasion, when my dysfunctional upper GI goes into a major symptom flare (due to neurological causes, not eating illegals or foods too advanced for my digestion!) I think it was a week on liquids before I "advanced" to the first food from the SCD intro. diet. I just stopped trying to eat starches and grains, and switched to homemade gelatin instead of using Jello. During the months I was on liquids I did use a multivitamin regularly. I made my own broth even before switching to SCD, so it was packed with nutrients. Protein in the form of scrambled eggs or baked chicken were the first foods I added after my clear liquid diet, and I stuck with them for days before I tried my first vegetable. Granted I wasn't working full-time while I was on clear liquids, and I spent a lot of my days lying in bed or on the couch because of the pain and nausea. A liquid diet won't give you lots of energy or enough nutrition, and is something that should be used with the approval of your doctor (as my clear liquid diet was). But I found that clear liquids was the only way to get my symptoms calmed down enough so I could begin to introduce solid foods again. I did find that making sure my clear liquid diet contained only SCD-permitted ingredients helped me progress enough to start adding protein which helped me advance enough to tolerate a few vegetables. When I'm in the hospital on clear liquids, or even soft foods, I have my family bring me my food, as I have made the choice to stick to SCD foods. Being 100% SCD has been the only way I've gotten my dysfunctional digestion to work reasonably well. Kim M. SCD 6 years >>>>>>>>>> How bad would it be for me if I were to do the non SCD drinks until I (hopefully) reached remission and then start back up on SCD afterwards? Or is there any SCD liquid diet I can follow? Right now I'm only eating broth, juice and gelatin. I can't imagine staying on it for too long without really missing out on nutrients and protein. Thanks,Amber
