Guest guest
Has anyone ever used questran (the generic is cholestryramine which my doc prescribed) for a little while to help bind up stool? It's used frequently for those who have their gall bladders removed and have diarrhea (like me). I've fought off using it for a year but thought I might try it, along w/SCD for a little while. Thoughts? Marla IBS-D 20 yrs SCD 11/
Guest guest
I have, Marla. After surgery to remove the ileum it was necessary for me to take Questran to absorb bile (which causes d) that no longer would be absorbed by the ileum. I started with Questran many years ago and switched to Questran lite. Questran has sugar in it----lots of it. Questran Lite uses aspartame. Recently I switched to Colestid granules which I think is just the active drug--no fillers. I can't see the need for so much sugar in Questran. None of these drugs taste good. It seems to make sense to take the drug without the fillers. I've had 3 resections and couldn't get along without one of these drugs. HTH. I haven't used it myself but I can offer my mother's experience with it ten years ago or so. She had IBS but not as we do from dysbiosis. Her D was from heavy heart meds and also nervous type. When they upped her meds in the hospital it upped the D to totally unreasonable and after I beat on them awhile they gave her Questran. It worked just fine! THe fact that she was scrawny by then and had low cholesterol didn't seem to be particularly lowered more by it. I mean, I don't think it hurt her. Having said that, I don't know what's in it, maybe a bunch of total illegals for us so you would need to weight the benefits against that. I've fought off using it for a year but thought I might try it, along w/SCD for a little while. **I tried Cholestryamine when I was first diagnosed with SIBO. It would make me feel awful (and I was already feeling really bad) for the first day, then I'd feel great the next day, and then back to normal by the third day (I experimented with it first, and didn't go in for full dosing). This was also the time I was starting SCD, and I discovered that both the Cholestramine and Cholestryamine Light contain illegals (I contacted the company directly for the ingredient list). It would also make me exceptionally bloated, which I already was to begin with, so that I could only take about a quarter of a pack. I think it did help me form stool at that time, but I don't think it helped with the mucous. After a few weeks of limited dosing, I went off of it, with relief, and kept improving on SCD. I know that the active ingredient in it has the ability to remove toxins, and I think that is why I felt so good the day after taking it. And I think the illegals were what made me feel so bad the first day after taking. Based on my experience, I'd give it a pass if there is any bacterial/yeast overgrowth going on in the gut.
