Guest guest
I love the idea of a store bought legal foods list. Here are a few things that I have found. Lara Bars-(dates, fruit and nuts) Trader Joes " Real Mayonaise " seems legal to me. French made " Dijon " mustards have no sugar added. Costco Kirkland Brand " Shaved Parmesan Cheese " has no cellulose or anything added. " Apple-a-day " flash pasturized fresh apple juice seems ok to me. We have an SCD-Advanced group for discussing getting store bought stuff approved as possibly legal. To have something okayed, you cannot just say, " I think it's OK. " You must contact the manufacturer, and get a physical letter from them stating that it contains no added starch, sugar, grains, potatos, natural or artificial flavors, etc. etc. etc. If it's a multi-ingredient item, you have to track all the ingredients. When you have the letter, please send me a photocopy (or scan it and send me the JPG, and I'll add it to our library. Too, you have to realize that the same brand of something made in different parts of the country may have different ingredients. " President's Choice " mustard turned out to be legal in NYC, but illegal in Atlanta, GA. I'll lay odds that Trader Joe's won't give you a letter for any of the products. Having been made really, really ill by commercially processed cheese, I won't trust it. Instead, I have one of these: http://us.microplane.com/microplanespecialtyseriesparmesanrotarygrater.aspx and I can make my own shredded cheddar or parmesan quickly, on the spot. Is that apple juice or apple cider? Is it refrigerated, and cloudy? That clear yellow junk almost always has added sugar -- and they get away with it by extracting sugar from other apple juice and adding it to the " 100% apples " stuff. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

At some point are you going to share what you've learned in that group with those of us who aren't in it? Liz

Well, since one of the things which must be done is get a letter, and I don't have time to query all these manufacturers, I'll be happy to share the letters I get -- whether someone is in that group or not. My personal feeling on store-bought stuff is that by the time I get a letter, and make sure about cross-contamination issues, I could just as easily have made something safe at home. So far, despite all the discussion of how neat a list of store-bought foods would be, we've had exactly two letters submitted: one for Penzey's onion and garlic powders, and the other for Cento Tomato products. Both letters are in the library for same in this Forum. So far, the list of foods which may be legal outside those mentioned in BTVC is exactly what I said: I don't have any further letters. I'll acknowledge that there are a couple of items I use which I haven't gotten a letter for yet... but I don't mention those on the list. I have mentioned E-lyte, an electrolyte concentrate from BodyBio which is convenient. I have an email on that which is halfway there. I have to write and get an actual letter. So.... you have the report. Cento tomato products are OK and the letter can be inspected in our library. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
