Hey all, I have been over at the pecanbread for ages getting my kiddos on the

right track, but I have been trying to keep up with this list too. You guys are

too full of great info and AWESOME recipes <wink> to ignore this list! Now I

have a good friend with an undiagnosed gut problem who is doing SCD and is

curious about using Aloe Vera. She wants to drink it and is wondering if anyone

has done that and if so, how it affected them. She has read that it is

sometimes used by people with Crohn's and colitis as well.

If anyone has any experience with this, you can post on the list or email me off

list, whatever you prefer!

Thanks so much!

Chrissy,

Aloe vera is bad ju-ju.

Aloe Vera Illegal It contains mucilaginous

polysaccharides as well as increasing the release of tumor necrosis

factor which is associated with IBD inflammation and increased immune

stimulation.

As Marilyn said, it is illegal. Pre-SCD, I tried it. It cures

*everything* externally so I thought organic aloe vera juice would be

great. I came so very close to passing out. Made me very

light-headed, nauseas and had to try it again *just in case* but it

does that everytime. Even if it were legal, I'd avoid it.

I asked my GI doc and she said it could do permanent damage (I guess

worse than we have?).

Yeah, I used it a few months pre-SCD. Actually, very over priced aloe pills.

It was actually pretty effective for some weeks or months - don't remember

how long precisely - until thanksgiving

hit and I pigged out on a whole lot of Papa Beard's indescribably scrumptious

pumpkin cream puffs, which was, like, my favorite indulgence at the time.

(Actually, I preferred caramel to pumpkin, but that was a season special.)

And of course I didn't understand the whole sugar/bacteria/inflammatory reaction

that was taking place. And why it was no longer effective after that point.

Can you keep us updated?  I tried it pre-SCD *organic aloe vera juice* but I'd get so light-headed and sort of dizzy, I'd have to literally lay down.

I'd swear by it for anything external though.  I have thought about aloe-based enemas kind of like Vitamin E enemas just to see if it would work.  Is that still illegal?  (I don't think I'd admit that anywhere except here).

crohn's

I wouldn't touch it, even in my " healed " digestive state. I have concerns about distilling it, extracting some components, then reassembling it. And I would want to do some research into whether breaking apart mucopolysaccharide chains actually transforms the sugars/carbs into a monosaccharide state or just lessens the chain length which means our digestions still can't break it down. And since I'm not a biochemist, and don't have the lab equipment to run tests.... It all sounds very iff-y to me, and not something I'd want to attempt.

I would ask my doctor to really give me a detailed explanation of why he thinks it will help. I do that all the time when my doctors recommend something. And even then I'd say no, having learned a lot about polysaccharides and digestion over the past six years.

But that's me.If you do decide to try it, just start with a tiny amount, and be super cautious and super vigilant about any reactions. Stop taking it if you notice a reaction.Kim M.SCD 6 years >> > My doc put me on 's " Always Active " Aloe Vera because it is different than all the others and distilled. This is the same doc who put me on the SCD diet. (Boy, am I confused!)

> > I copied and pasted below info about this product. Because of the way it's made, is this one legal? If not, then I can't understand why my doc put me on it? I wonder if I will ever figure this stuff out.
