Guest guest
Do any other post-oppers sometimes get the feeling that you're jaw is back where it was pre-op? I had my underbite fixed; my lower jaw was moved back just 3mm. Every now and then I feel like I have my underbite again, even though this is impossible because I've got rubber bands keeping my jaws in place, not to mention plates and screws. I even noticed this right after surgery when I was tightly banded. Right before falling asleep I'd let my jaw relax and my lower lip would jut out just a bit, giving me the " sensation, " for lack of a better word, of an underbite. I suppose I just need to get used to the new bite and let my muscles acclimate. I'm a little freaked out about relapse and this isn't helping any. Guest guest
I completely know what you are talking about. I am 6 months post op and i had a huge gummy smile. my upper jaw was moved up a lot, lower advanced and genio done. when i talk and smile i oftenthink i still have a lot of gum showing. i then look in mirror and realize of course that i do not. i also " knock my chin " into things now when i never did before (washing face, splashing water, eating ice cream cone, etc). Yes, i do understand! > > Do any other post-oppers sometimes get the feeling that you're jaw is > back where it was pre-op? I had my underbite fixed; my lower jaw was > moved back just 3mm. Guest guest
Wow, does this sound familiar. I had an underbite and I have to check myself in the mirror to make sure it's gone!! I find the worst time for me is when I sleep when my muscles are relaxing. I wake up frequently at night to make sure my lower jaw is not sticking out. I'm almost obsessed with it!! I guess it's like having a limb removed; you'll always (or at least for a while) feel like things are still the same. Guest guest
I'm so glad I'm not alone! I was thinking yesterday that there's a whole psychological adjustment that needs to take place after surgery. Even though my face doesn't look that different, my lower jaw is much smaller. I had big self-esteem issues because of that damn thing and they're still rearing their ugly heads. Me thinks it's time for some psychotherapy! > > > > Do any other post-oppers sometimes get the feeling that you're jaw > is > > back where it was pre-op? Guest guest
The feeling is long gone now, but I still felt as though I had an overbite in the early weeks post-op. There's no doubt in my mind that much of this is in our minds and not reality. We're all in charge of our own self esteem (although we might need professional help in improving it as mental habits are difficult to break). 3 cents worth (C$) (upper/lower/genio Aug 2002) > > > > > > Do any other post-oppers sometimes get the feeling that you're > jaw > > is > > > back where it was pre-op?
