Mia, Black beans are rather advanced. http://uclbs.org/tidbits/beans/ will tell you about the legal beans on SCD. They're kind of limited, because most beans have entirely too much starch in them. Guest guest
Yep! I prepared them the right way - and it's not that I'm having problems when I eat them, it's just that I really want to do this right and give myself a fair shot of getting off my meds. Guest guest
Hey Mia, Black beans can be a little rough on the system if you're just getting started. If you're eating fish a couple times a week you're probably doing just fine for protein. Do you eat eggs or cheese? If you're concerned about protein you could have one of those. When you are ready for beans just make absolutely sure you're soaking them overnight, rinsing them and then simmering until they're tender. You might want to start with a different bean earlier on in the diet like lima? Guest guest
Lucy told me azuki beans are legal but advanced. They are small red beans, I find them in bulk at Whole Foods. They are kind of sweet-ish. High in iron. That's Lucy at Lucy's Kitchen Shoppe who's been on the diet a long time. Now legality is debatable to the moderators. So are purple hulled peas. I do fine with them and nobody has deemed them legal or illegal. I get them frozen at certain grocery stores. They would be advanced also. Baby lima beans are filling if you haven't tried them. I usually go with the store brand at Safeway because they seem cleaner. I still don't eat black beans 'often' or any other beans besides the ones I mentioned. That's just me because of the hull being too thick on most beans. Debbie 40 cd > Hey Mia, > Black beans can be a little rough on the system if you're just getting > started. Guest guest
Thanks everybody - since I'm in the first week really, I think fish and eggs are all I'm able to do since I don't eat chicken or beef. But I have a feeling I might have to bite the bullet and try adding chicken really slowly so I don't go out of my mind. > >> > >> I'm a newbie and tried searching through the board to see if this was > >> answered already but didn't find anything. Well, as far as the azuki beans are concerned, if Lucy of Lucy's Kitchen Shop, who's been on SCD for around 15 years, says they're ok, but advanced, I'll certainly take her word on it. <grin> I ;earned a good chunk of what I know about SCD cooking from her cookbook, which was the only one in existence when I started! Can you point me to some info on the " purple hull beans " you're talking about? Are they the " string bean " type which is purple, but turns green when cooked? Or are we talking about something else? Guest guest
She is so nice! She actually called me when I posted on being anemic again. I googled azuki beans and they are like 20% iron if I remember that correctly. Purple hulled peas are the magic beans that make your hands purple if they are fresh and turn green when you cook them. They are not in the same family as black-eyed peas. I buy them frozen and they would be advanced. I don't think I've ever seen them dried. Just frozen and fresh. Guest guest
They are not string beans, they are shelled. I never could find information to prove they are one or another--conflicting information. Forgot to answer your first post, sorry. Debbie 40 cd > She is so nice! Guest guest
I found them first at Rice Epicurean in the frozen section. It's sort of an expensive grocery store. Almost a specialty type of grocery store. Couldn't find them at Whole Foods. Safeway has them here but I'm still waiting to do a search and confirm with Marilyn they are legal before saying too much. My parents are from AL and my grandparents grew them in their garden. Was so glad to find them and be able to eat them again.
