Hello to all. I had joined this group a while ago but hadn't posted

because i thought my surgery would still be a couple of months away.

Turns out that my insurance (united Healthcare) is cancelling all

single policy holders(like myself) on feb 1st!

Now i have been doing all the paperwork for a year and i hate to

start all over again.

So now i am being forced to ahve my surgery before the end of the

month. My orthodontist says im read and all i have to do is get the

pins put in according to him.

Any advice for someone seeing in getting this procedure done a lot

sooner then expected ?

Thanks

Hello there, I was just wondering how long you've been in braces up

to now and how rushed is this surgery...when were you scheduled to

have it before? I'm getting my braces on myself on Jan. 18 and my

insurance isn't finalized yet either. How long did it take you to

get the surgery approved...my carrier has already denied my first

request to cover it. Thanks.

it took 3 months to get my insurance straightened out, but my OS took

care of it for me. personally, i would NOT recommend starting any part

of the treatment you intend them to cover- if they see you have

already started to pay for it, GOOD LUCK getting them to cover it!! if

you aren't going to ask them to pay for the braces, then go ahead and

get them put on. but if your request for converage includes

orthodontics, WAIT until they okay it to start with braces!!

I had braces on when i was 13 and then got them taken off a year and

ahalf later.. not i have had braces on since may so roughly six

months and change. I was planning on having the surgery in feb/march

and it took me almost 8 months to get my surgery approved.. stupid

slow insurance company. Make sure you get the oral ssurgeon

specifies that it is a corrective medical procedure and not cosmetic

( i got denied the first time as well)

are you sure you want to have the surgery if your health insurance

will be expired soon after? who pays for all the post-op appointments?

what if you have complications that need to be fixed down the road?

will your new insurance company cover pre-existing conditions??

You'll be done and over it a lot sooner!

Good wishes to you. Actually, there's not a lot you can do to

prepare. Stock up on the needed supplies, be in as good health as you

can -- and figure your ortho (and you) have done the needed prep.

Best,

Cammie

I was in a similar situation. I had to have surgery by the end of

2004 because the insurance company that covered my surgeon and the

surgery ended at the end of 2004. If I hadn't had surgery by then, I

would have had to find a new insurance company and a new surgeon,

even though I had been working with this surgeon and had braces for

about a year already. Thankfully, post op appointments were accounted

for in the cost of surgery, so even though I still see my original

surgeon, and he is no longer covered by my new insurance I can still

see him for post op appointments and not have to pay.

I do worry about what happens if I relapse or something happens that

would require me to have surgery again. I would love to stick with my

original surgeon for that, of course, but I try to remember that I

will find a way to cross that bridge if I ever come to it.
