Guest guest
I'm sorry for posting so many questions...but I have another one: The reason why I'd get orthognathic surgery done (principally) is to address an anterior openbite, which manifests itself as me not being able to chew some foods because there is about a 0.5mm gap between my top teeth and bottom teeth. However, my orthodontist has told me that even if I get the surgery done, there's a chance that the openbite would return, and in fact he has seen that happen a few times in his patients, although it is quite rare. Has anyone else had this happen to them or had this surgery to fix an anterior open bite? Evidently this is caused by a tongue thrust but my first orthodontist (when I was 13), although he pointed out that I had one, never did anything to try to correct it. I'd really hate to go through the surgery to end up in the same position where I am now, even if the probability is rare. I also have a crossbite/class III malocclusion, but what really bothers me is the openbite and it is that which I'd really like to try to fix. Thanks,
Guest guest
There are appliances that restrain tongue thrust, and supposedly teach one not to do that any more. Most of them look pretty unpleasant to me -- tongue cribs and the like. But ask your orthodontist, and ask if speech therapy (or physical therapy, or something of the sort) might help. Good wishes to you. I think a true tongue thrust is a difficult matter to treat. And hey -- don't apologize for asking questions! All of us have them. That's why we came here in the first place!
