Guest guest
Hey all. I am having surgery to fix a crooked (asymmetrical) lower jaw which distorts my appearance. I was just wondering... I will have to have my jaw wired and am concerned about nausea post- surgery. Did anyone else worry about this? I mean, what happens if I have to vomit and cannot open my mouth? Also, does anyone know how long on average the braces must stay on after the surgery? I hope it isn't longer than 1 year... I would greatly appreciate your input from those who have had to deal with this. Thanks
Guest guest
i have rubberbands instead of wiring, and i had alot of nausea after my surgery. i did throw up twice, and both times they didn't cut the bands off. they put a suction device into the back of my mouth and i layed on my side. i know they keep wire-cutters by your bed in case of an emergency, so i wouldn't worry about a fatal situation. it is just scary. other people with wires might answer your question better. my braces are on for 6 months after surgery, but i think its different for each person. it has to do with your bite, i think, and if your bite is good and everything heals fine you get the braces off. i would ask your surgeon about your situation gina > > Hey all. Guest guest
I was really nervous about this, too. I have a tendency towards nausea anyway, so I told my surgeon about this and they prescribed anti-nausea patches for me. I wore one the day of surgery and did not throw up post-op. However, after I got home and started taking in liquids and medicine, things got pretty bad. I ended up throwing up for two days straight -- not constantly, of course, but about once every two hours. It wasn't that bad. Ok, obviously it's not fun to throw up, especially when you're tightly banded, but it's not scary either. I just leaned forward and it came out through the small spaces in the back of my mouth and I sort of pushed it through my teeth. It also came out my nose a couple of times! But really, it's not that bad and goes away quickly. Maddie P.S. In general, people keep their braces on for 6 months post-op. But as I'm sure you've learned from reading this board, everyone's different and your OD will need to check you out post-op to give you an idea. > > Hey all.
