April - I, too, have returned to college and in my Multicultural class we were

to write a paper on our own culture. Since I don't know anything about my

culture, I asked if I could do a research paper on Obesity in America in

comparison with other Cultures and he agreed. I wrote the paper and his

response came back that he learned a lot. I also got the total possible on this

paper. I was extremely happy and also learned some interesting facts myself.

Good luck on your paper and let us know how it went.

Doc info-please respond

Hi everyone! I am basically a lurker, but jump in every once in

awhile. Just a little info about me - I'm in the Houston area, will

be 2yrs post op 6/18 w/ RnY, have lost about 155 pds.

I started going back to college to get a degree in Business

Management and here is where I need your help. I have a small

research paper to do this month and since we can pick our topic (has

to be business related) I thought I would do a paper on wls. How

does this relate to business you ask??? Well, as we all know wls is

becoming more and more available to the general public. I would

venture a guess that this means that there are docs out there who

are seeing this as a $$$ making venture, not a life-saving cause. I

would also guess that there are docs that when they first started

offering wls, had the very best heart but have become " jaded " by the

insurance companies, etc. There are other doc's that have been and

are still in this because they see the value in saving people's

lives. I want to show that this is not just a cosmetic thing or

something that the person that does not have a medical need for wls

to have, although I have heard of docs that will do wls on people

who have only 50-80 pds to loose.

What was your experience? Do you feel that I am just thinking this

stuff up or is it something that you have experienced yourself?

My personal experience was that I started out w/ a group. Felt like

I was being herded through the process like so many cows. Ended

having wls w/ a private doc, was not a number to him. Still in

contact w/ him and his office staff. As a matter of fact, I plan on

contacting him and asking the same questions.

If you would like to give your opinion, I would love to have it.

The professor made a statement last night that he has heard so many

different papers that it would be VERY hard for us to come up w/ a

topic he is not familiar with. HMMMMM...well, let's just see!! :)

Thanks,

April

Tina,

I have thought of doing something along that line

as well. But, I have another 2 years of writting

research papers, so it will come in time. One

interesting topic would also be how " obesity " is

really not an issue in many other cultures. Or

at least does not seem to be from mine and other

friends perceptions. I have many friends from

Eastern cultures, typically not an issue. I also

have friends from different culters here in the

US that on a whole do not have an issue w/

" obesity " . Interesting that being caucasian

(white as a sheet) is where the issues lie. Now

I'm not talking about health issues here, I'm

only talking about acceptance, etc.

I would be interested in reading your paper. I

would not plagerize at all, just useful info.

April,

There are so many ways to approach this subject. It is no doubt

that it can be a money making thing for some doctors. The other aspect

would be the increase in sales of protein drinks, protein supplements,

vitamin and mineral supplements, etc. SOunds like you are on the right

track.

Dave,

I agree with you that MOST doc's aren't in it for the $$, however there are

some who are. These are the one's that imho, tend to work w/ groups that

handle all of their day to day " stuff " and they just do the surgery. Maybe

its a lack of knowledge about the effects of the surgery, maybe they just

don't care. I don't know. That's the point of me doing this paper - to

find out.

My personal thought is that the majority are in it to help people. The sad

part is, that the ones that are associated w/ the " mills " are the ones whose

patients have the most complications/problems, etc. I know of one group

that takes patients from all over the country, they don't even allow the

patient to meet w/ the doc until the day of surgery. Then it's all over.

The patient goes home the doc goes on to doing more surgeries. The docs

don't get to have a say in who should/should not have surgery. There are

times when a person's health does not give the best circumstances for

surgery. It is this type of organization (not so much the doc) that

concerns me. Kind of like insurance companies - they are mainly looking at

the bottom line, not the health and well being of their clients -US.

Thanks for replying,

April
