When that happened to me...they put me in ER and started rehydrating me. How

is the water situation? The postural hypotension is what clued the doc

in..and believe it or not..I was drinking a lot of water....I just got

dehydrated

for whatever reason.

Hi Pamela,

Yes, the swelling will go down. Just tough it out for today and

tomorrow - last Saturday was the worst day with swelling for me , and

Sunday was very little different. Monday things started looking

better. You might get lucky - maybe it will go down faster. I'm

still pretty swollen around my nose and upper lip (and a little bit

under the chin), but other than that, no swelling, and I feel much

better.

Irene.

My doc said heat after the first two days, but ask yours. Docs have

different ideas about these things.

I believe the swelling usually starts to go around day 4 to 5, but

remember -- that's a " usually. " Yours may go sooner or (sorry!) later.

Glad you're doing well ... and you are, no matter how it seems!

Would it make your poor nose feel any better to have some company in

its misery? Long story made short -- we have a problematic back door,

and this morning, while going out to do laundry in the utility house,

I took a sort of a full-gainer on a concrete floor underlayment. I

lost more blood from this fall than I did in the surgery, really

creamed my nose and face, but at least this time, unlike the last, I

didn't chip a front tooth, thank heavens! I'm ok, but it sure wasn't

fun, and I am more sore than I was post op. At least I didn't do that

post op, though!

Keep on keeping on.

Hi Cammie--

sorry to hear about your fall!! i'm thinking that heat would feel

REALLY good so i might tryt ouse a warm compress.

i have been homebound in my little apartment with my parents--too

many people here!! my brother lives in michigan too, and friends have

been stopping by.

i got super duper stuffed up today and started to get disgruntled--my

dad ended up calling the surgeon (i had lower only) and hooking me up

with some afrin in the meantime. i haven't watned to take afrin

because i know it can be 'habit forming'. my brother pointed out

that it's okay, in the unlikely event that i get hooked, i can get un-

hooked at some point when my mouth isn't so swollen. so yeah, afrin

will be my best friend. doc said afrin as well, and claritin if afrin

didn't work.

i have some advice for people going into surgery--have fiber the day

before you go in, and get on metamucil/prune juice asap. i learned

this lesson the hard way. that's all i'll say.

so, is heat the next step after 48 hours? that's what i figured....

take care all,

pamela

Don't use the heat for more than 20 minutes or so at a time... And

be careful not to get it too hot without a buffer (like a face

towel) in between the moisture and your face. (Yep. I should have

said both earlier.)

Do remember, too, that you're the patient, but that doesn't mean

that you have to BE patient with visitors. (I have never understood

folks who want to do major visits at the hospital. Anybody in the

hospital, I think, needs to be left alone to rest, unless it's a

long-term, lonely stay... Hospitals are stressful enough without

adding the feeling that the patient needs to try to be entertaining.

But then I am a known curmudgeon and mullygrub.)

As for the Afrin -- nothing wrong with that, although I think I

would try Claritin (or, for me, Zyrtec, which works better) first.

If you use too many doses of Afrin within a given 12 or 24 hour

period, you can get what's known as a rebound effect, which means

that the tissues swell even more than they had to begin with. It's

not exactly " getting hooked. " It's just that the tissues bounce back

even more swollen than they started out. You've tried a vaporizer

and steamy baths, showers, or even breathing over a pot of steaming

water, I am assuming. There again, be sure not to scald yourself,

though. Menthol in the water (or eucalyptus) can be soothing, too...

C.

I look only a little bit as though someone had encountered me with

malice aforethought in a dark alley, as the result of that fall...

Not nearly so bad as post-op. Even my sweet surgeon was embarrassed

by those bruises, pleading with me, " Cammie, please don't tell

anybody I did that to you! " I do and did tell lots of folks, because

I bruise easily, recover easily, and the bruises were of no long-

term import.... He fixed what ailed me, though, with good results

and no long-term deficits.

I just got home from Duke, and we left the house this morning at 7.

Ugh. Long day.

I had my small bowel follow through done today, and everything went

fine. I did get very lightheaded with the fasting, but they let me

have a few sips of juice after I drank the barium. The radiologist

said my intestines are very photogenic and that there's no sign of

inflammation or strictures at all =)

So I guess this means all my issues are still coming from my colon. I

just had a lot of bloodwork done, and all the inflammation markers

were up, and I'm anemic again (sigh) and a stool test I also had done

showed inflammation.

Soooo, today I have to start azathioprine. Or however you spell it.

I'm totally in shock. But apparently there's no choice =(

And Amelia, I showed my GI doctor your email that you sent me about

checking my adrenals, and she said that for adrenal insufficiency,

usually there is a sodium/potassium inbalance and some other very

specific indicator that I didn't have. So she didn't think it was an

issue. She said I could talk to my endocrinologist about it though if

I really wanted to.

Peace =)

Hi Alyssa,

I'm glad the upper GI showed no problems. I know it is a shock. You have been an

amazing trooper on SCD, especially for someone your age. I hope you feel better

soon. You have learned a lot about nutrition and keeping yourself healthy, and

it will help.
