Guest guest
i had a real big huge problem with this and a few things, I think, helped... Making sure I didn't have hpylori to start, using apple cider vinegar, (and drinking a teeny bit in water), strict SCD and lots of water helped me bigtime. that and avoiding my personal acidy triggers like too many tomatoes, eggplant, etc... i can have them all now, in moderation.... and its resolved itself. Hope that helps! ~ Dana Subject: UC and gastro-reflux disorderTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Saturday, February 20, 2010, 8:34 PM Hi, i am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with gastro-reflux disorder/heartburn and SCD? a family member has both ulcerative colitis and gastro reflux disorder. the reflux/heartburn came about 2 years before UC started. he's been taking Nexium for the reflux. he is about to start on the SCD. has the SCDiet helped anyone overcome gastro-reflux/ heartburn? thanks
Guest guest
Emma,I think I read on the UK companion SCD board that a group member said that the heartburn/reflux was due to a relaxed valve at the base of the esophagus into the stomach. A low stomach ph can cause it as well as allowing pathogenic bacteria to thrive in the stomach. I would definitely do as Dana suggests regarding testing for h. pylori and low stomach acid (low and high acid can give the same symptoms) and using something to increase stomach acid if needed.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 20 monthsLDN 3 mg To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Sun, February 21, 2010 4:34:09 AMSubject: UC and gastro-reflux disorder Hi, i am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with gastro-reflux disorder/heartburn and SCD? a family member has both ulcerative colitis and gastro reflux disorder. the reflux/heartburn came about 2 years before UC started. he's been taking Nexium for the reflux. he is about to start on the SCD. has the SCDiet helped anyone overcome gastro-reflux/ heartburn? thanks
Guest guest
I find that taking digestive enzymes helps me a great deal with my acid reflux issues. I have low stomach acidity so I need help to digest my food. The SCDiet has helped to greatly reduce my reflux symptoms. This family member will need to keep a food diary going as everyone is different. What may trigger heartburn and other reflux symptoms for one person, may not for another. I’ve been on the diet for 2 years and I’m still struggling with this as well as C. problems. For me, what helps my C. problems exacerbates my acid reflux and vice versa. It’s a fine line and it often drives me crazy!!! Sleeping at a 45 degree angle really helps. Also, eating smaller meals and more often, making sure your stomach is never empty…and avoiding the obvious heartburn triggers: alcohol, caffeine, spices, high acidic food… Let me know if you have more questions, Cheers, GERDS and chronic C. Guest guest
Pre-SCD I also had reflux and took Tums and for a while esp when I was pregnant Prevacid. I noticed an immediate improvement once I started the SCD. I had already stopped the Prevacid but was relying heavily on the tums & still had nights I had trouble sleeping. Three days in I was sleeping well! Occasionally I'll have a mild episode but it is brief & ,for me, it's usually having more of a particular food than usual.
