SCD, when I was on a no/low-carb diet (and still had a very little bit of sugar

intake from various sauces and spices and what-not), I decided to try

introducing honey, and I got a lot of gas as a result, within a few hours of

trying it, each time that I did. Honey seems kind of central to SCD (and if I

can't tolerate honey, why should I be able to tolerate, say, apples?), so I

wonder how to test whether that's causing my problems or what..

which I tend to tolerate fine when I'm on a low carb diet and I tend to have

problems with on a normal diet. So at this point I don't know whether it was

the apples, a delayed reaction to the bananas, some combination of bananas + red

meat, etc. Can you guys give me some advice as to how I can get through a bad

period (like day 8) and get some meaningful data out of it? (Note, these

starting 8 days are pretty useless data also because I didn't realize until day

8 that my vanilla extract had sugar in it! Man! You'd think that if you're only

eating like 4 foods, you'd be able to catch all of the SCD illegals!)

Hi and welcome,

Unfortunately, the process is trial and error and it can be very slow at first.

But if you think you may have a problem with honey, leave it out for now, and

instead try things you think you are okay with. At some point, when you are in

a positive plateau, then introduce a tiny amount at a time when you have

introduced nothing else, on a day that is already going well. Then you can

see how you react to honey. If that goes okay, leave it out for a day, then

increase a tiny bit more the 3rd day, and etc.

Also, don't intro food on days that are not going well. Try to stick to basics

on those days - and in the intro period, it always help to go back to meat/

chicken/fish bone broth on those days - because the gelatin properties of

the broth is very healing of the gut lining.

Problems of food combining is complicated - and you will only figure that

out over time - lots of people keep food journals in order to note their

reactions to things, so that is another possibility, but as I said, it will

take some time to get it straight.

Honey has high fructose and apples don't - so that is one reason why

you could possibly tolerate apples, but not honey at this point in your

illness. Some people do low fructose SCD either throughout or at

certain points in the diet to get over bumps in the road.

Also, you don't say what you have - it is always easier to give advice

when we know what the issue is.

Mara

Hi!

It would be nice know your name…

You are introducing new foods too

quickly. I would go back to the

intro diet for 1 day or 2 than introduce 1 new food every 2 weeks or so…very

slowly. Start out with 1 teaspoon,

wait 1 or 2 days, if you don’t have a bad reaction, take 1 tablespoon,

wait 1 day or 2, if you still don’t have a negative reaction, have a

little more. You may be able to

have it every day or you may have to have it only every other day. Once you’re satisfied that your

body can tolerate this new food, then you can start introducing another.

For honey, it could be that you can’t

tolerate it. It’s an SCD

legal food but it still goes straight into your blood stream whereas fruit is

completely digested by your system. Others on this diet could explain it to

you better. For me, honey

constipates me as well as high sugar foods like bananas, probably because I

have yeast Candida.

Hope this helps,

Good luck,

Difficulties

starting out

I'm having some trouble getting past the intro diet,

as I seem to get both good and bad days and it's hard to tie them to specific

foods I'm introducing. A couple of questions:

-Is it possible to have a problem with tolerating honey? Before I started SCD,

when I was on a no/low-carb diet (and still had a very little bit of sugar

intake from various sauces and spices and what-not), I decided to try

introducing honey, and I got a lot of gas as a result, within a few hours of

trying it, each time that I did. Honey seems kind of central to SCD (and if I

can't tolerate honey, why should I be able to tolerate, say, apples?), so I

wonder how to test whether that's causing my problems or what..

-My second question is sort of related: how, in detail, do you test out

individual foods? I'm back on intro now because I was introducing foods at a

rate of 1 new food every 2 days, and this happened:

Day Stage How I'm feeling, average for the day (1-10, 10 = good, 1=terrible)

1 Intro diet 5

2 5

3 6

4 7

5 Bananas 8

6 7

7 Apples 5

8 3

(9 Intro 6

10 5)

Now this looks like I have a problem with apples, but day 7 started out badly

before I had even had any apples, and on day 6 I had some burgers for dinner,

which I tend to tolerate fine when I'm on a low carb diet and I tend to have

problems with on a normal diet. So at this point I don't know whether it was

the apples, a delayed reaction to the bananas, some combination of bananas +

red meat, etc. Can you guys give me some advice as to how I can get through a

bad period (like day 8) and get some meaningful data out of it? (Note, these

starting 8 days are pretty useless data also because I didn't realize until day

8 that my vanilla extract had sugar in it! Man! You'd think that if you're only

eating like 4 foods, you'd be able to catch all of the SCD illegals!)
