Guest guest
Hi i'm having upper jaw surgery, ive been reading this forum and noticed that alot of people are wired shut. When i had my consulation with the surgeon she said that being wired shut is an " old " method that isnt used anymore and that she'd be using plates & screws to hold it in place. Are there any extra possibilities of problems by this method? Im in Australia by the way.
Guest guest
Hi Down Under from Canada I am 1 week post- op and I was plated and screwed ,as well I am tightly banded...this is basicly the same as being wired.....maybe a more advanced way of keeping your mouth shut , but in combo ,maybe for a shorter period???....(I Hope) Bob - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " psylence199 " <psylence199@y...> wrote: > > Hi i'm having upper jaw surgery, ive been reading this forum and > noticed that alot of people are wired shut. Guest guest
Hi Bob Hope all is well i am following your progress closely I will be having simalr surgery later this year. Are you feeling better overall? My os told me i will have 2 elastics which i assume is lightly banded. Why did you need plates ? Did you have alot of movement needed?? Thanks Bob
Guest guest
I asked to have plates and screws. If I would have gotten them, I would have been wired shut with a splint for one week and then lightly banded for a couple more (as I was made to understand... as we know, actually living it is often different from what we are told in advance) He was unable to use the plates and screws because I still have my wisdom teeth and they were in the spot the screws would have gone. Also, I was told there is a higher risk of numbness (temporary or permanant) with plates and screws. In the end- I was only wired, no screws... the " old fashioned " way. I was tied shut with metal wires and a splint for 18 long days and then tighty rubber banded shut for a total of 5.5 weeks combined. Now I just have 2 bands that I can remove for a few hours a day. (lightly banded- by popular definition) I don't know how long I will be wearing them. My surgeon monitors the healing very closely (I read some posts where post-op people don't see their surgeon for a few weeks... I was in his office for a band change and adjustment at least once a week after the initial 18 days.) I think my surgeon is partial to the " old " method because he feels he has more control over the jaw placement as it heals.
