Guest guest
, I too have a deviated sceptum and am a bad mouth breather especially at night. It's good that you are asking this question now. I mentioned to my doctor that I had trouble breathing out of my nose and he sort of brushed it off. I take responsibility for not pushing the subject. I too have severe allergies to dust, dander, pollen, and sometimes I think just night time (because before bed my allergies are worst). I take allegra although only when I need it. My general doctor perscribed me Rhinocort nosespray before the surgery in fear that my nose breathing would be a problem. My OS never commented on this suggestion, just gave doctors orders for Afrin as usual. When I woke up from surgery (upper and lower) with a nose full of blood clots I had a serious panic attack because I felt I was not getting enough air through my mouth (which was swollen and full with a splint). The doctor kept telling me that I could breathe (Lots of people have this fear because of the mouth wired shut) but I really to this day feel that I was NOT getting enough air. I even refused my sudifed and pain meds because I felt I could not swallow anything because I wouldn't get enough air through my mouth. Also the nurses were giving me all my medicine with a cup rather than a syringe!! I usually wore more than I swallowed. This was a concern from the beginning from my husband-my breathing. And that was the worst part after waking up from the surgery and that I know was the reason. When I got home the first week I cleaned and cleaned my nose and still was seriously paniced many times when I woke up because I felt I was struggling to get enough air from my mouth. I would just take more sudifed and nose sprays (I ended up using something over the counter a little stronger than Afrin). Towards the end of week 1 post op the Afrin was losing its affect and I was waking up 3-4 times a night to use it because i was stuffy. So I had to quit using it. I took many hot steamy showers and held steamy water with lemon up to my nose. Others suggested vicks vapor rub and menthal. Thankfully my nose started cooperating by week2 and I didn't have to use any nosespray and just cleaned it out frequently with hydrogine peroxide and water on q tips. All this to say...would I have rather had my deviated sceptum fixed before hand? I don't know what that surgery is like or the recovery. If it would have prolonged my jaw surgery-no. Because personally I want to get this over with. Also the problems I had with breathing were common to a lot of others without the deviated sceptum due to blood clots after the upper surgery so I may have experienced the same things regardless. Now I am 3 weeks post op and breathing fine. I will say my allergies are acting up but liquid benedryl does the trick and puts me to sleep as well. Good luck and I hope you get the answers you need to move forward. Jane > > Hello, I just started posting here recently. I am looking at > possibly having surgery this summer for upper and lower. Guest guest
I saw an ENT as well because I was breathing through my mouth a lot and feeling like when I breathe through my nose, I don't quite get enough air into my lungs. I don't have major allergies so I was not overwhelmed by the lack of air flow through my nose but I did learn that I have a moderate to severely deviated septum. who knew? I did not have surgery to fix it... in fact, I decided I had too many things on my mind to think about it. I had my jaw surgery. woke up and panicked cuz the thing was down my throat and I felt like I could not breathe. They pulled out the tube from my throat and that was it. I had no problems breathing after that. To be fair, I only had lower surgery so I was able to blow my nose which was good simply cuz it was filled with snot and blood for about a week and half. That's just my story... hope it's of some use to you! Good Luck, Tova > > , > > I too have a deviated sceptum and am a bad mouth breather especially > at night. Guest guest
, I did NOT have the problem with breathing through my nose, as you do, prior to surgery. But, I too had a couple of panic attacks in the hospital because I could not breath through my nose or mouth, which is wired shut. I highly recommend correcting any breathing problems prior to the oral surgery just to prevent any major problems. Good Luck! > > Hello, I just started posting here recently.
