Guest guest
There are two things I know of that you may be talking about, and I have had both done, with no harmful effects from either. First is something called " stripping " or " slenderizing. " To do that, the ortho shaves just a bit off as many teeth as he needs to, to get some space in which to work. It's like the thickness of a fingernail on each tooth. What I suspect you're talking about is the changes in occlusion. It makes sense that your teeth don't fit as they used to, and that a messed-up bite was reflected in the earlier occlusion. So they grind 'em up or down a bit. And a little bit of work can make a HUGE difference. Cammie > > Did any of you have some of your teeth trimmed so they would fit > together better? If so, do you know of any risks? Guest guest
Thanks for your reply, Cammie. Right now, I'm referring to your first example. I had braces on yesterday and was told at my next appointment they would put spacers around the teeth they would be trimming the following week. First of all, the word SPACERS got me all tense (last week wasn't fun) and then the thought of shaving off part of my teeth caught me by surprise. I was worried I would have to have them bonded or something. I called this afternoon and was assured, as you said, that they would be taking off very little - it's more like filing your fingernails. They're just trimming/shaving off a little off the bottoms where some teeth are wider so that my teeth will line up. I sure appreciate the time you take to answer all of these questions. Your insight is very helpful.
