Guest guest
Hi, I'm new here and just wondering if anyone else had a pediatrician who blew off torticollis and plagiocephaly as something the baby would outgrow? It makes me wonder whether we should switch doctors. I had to push to get the baby PT, but only after the damage was done. The doc is still convinced his head will straighten out on it's own, but he's now 6 months old and it looks worse to me than last month. I'm SO frustrated! Guest guest
Welcome- I would find a new doctor. It's not unusual for pediatrician's to write off helmets as a solution to a flat head (which I think is bogus to begin with), but that he is blowing off the tort on top of it, really infuriates me. It HAS to be resolved for there to even be a chance of the head self-correcting, which there is still minimal chance of (depending on the severity). My son had tort diagnosed at 2 months old, it was resolved through PT by the time he was 6 months old, but he still got a band at 17 months old because his head hadn't rounded out yet. He wore 2 bands with great success given his age, but his head is still not " perfect " and he's on his way to turning 3. So I'm not sure where doctors have found the proof that heads round out on their own, since my son is proof of the exact opposite. If the ped is willing to write the script, and you really want to band your son, I say take it and run (just so you don't have to waste a lot of time finding someone else to write it), then look for a new ped. Good luck! I kept on finaly she got her halo today she is 6mnths with severe plag brach and mild tort. I think it happens alot > > Hi, I'm new here and just wondering if anyone else had a pediatrician who blew off torticollis and plagiocephaly as something the baby would outgrow? Guest guest
Absolutely. Our pediatrician actually told me that 'lots of babies have crooked heads these days, so it's fine'. Um.. yeah.. no. As for the Torticollis, I told her that I didn't think that Mia was getting enough PT to actually benefit her, and she basically shrugged her shoulders. She's a real winner. The good news is that you don't need permission to go have a consultation. I figured that we may as well drive 7 hours roundtrip and have the peace of mind of knowing if it's a real issue or not, according to people who actually know what they're talking about. And I'm glad we went, because she does need a band. I called our pediatrician because I still needed a prescription, and even after offering to send her the measurements/photos, she still tried to shrug it off as 'not that bad'. My advice would be to find a new pediatrician. If you can't do that, or even if you can, go ahead and get a consultation done. It can't hurt. The worse that can happen is they say that it's not severe enough for treatment. And if that's not the case, you'll have facts on your side that your pediatrician really can't argue with (even though they'll probably try). I don't regret 'going above her', and I'm sure you won't either. Guest guest
Our pediatrician claimed that he " never sent a kid home with a helmet before. " So I had a lot of confidence that Luke's head would round out like he said. However, after his 4 month check up, something in me made me realize that his head wouldn't round out like his ped said it would....I knew it would get more round, but not the " norm " . Go with your gut. If you feel like your ped is giving you the run around, get a second opinion. , mom to Luke, 5.3 months, severe brachy, mild left plagio 3 weeks in STARband New York > > > > > > > Hi, I'm new here and just wondering if anyone else had a pediatrician who > > blew off torticollis and plagiocephaly as something the baby would outgrow? > > It makes me wonder whether we should switch doctors.
