Guest guest
Hello all, I am trying to help my mother who I believe has SIBO. She has been on the SCD diet for about a month now, after I encouraged her to buy the book. She's very discouraged, however, because she has been bloated and looks 9 months pregnant (her belly is huge) for about 5 years now and it never goes away. And since she went on the diet it actually seems to be getting worse, not better. My question is this: Have any of you with very large distended abdomens seen your bloating go away successfully? I'm trying to encourage my mom to continue but it's very frustrating when she's seeing so little success. Also: had anyone else been bloated for so long? Could that be part of the problem? Thanks for any help you can provide. Suzanne
Guest guest
When I was severely bloated for a long time it was because I was full of candida. Has she check into that issue? Guest guest
hello- i struggle with SIBO too and my boating got worse at the beginning of the diet for about a month and a half (from die off). i waited and started acidpoholis later so it wasn't so bad all at once. now at 2.5 months i have less bloating and hiatal hernia problems. i still get bloating but it is lower down... -andrea celiac/intolerances scd 2.5 months
Guest guest
Suzanne I deal with chronic bloating since I have poor motility in my upper GI. About a year after I started SCD I was still dealing with excessive bloating even though I was eating low-carb foods because of a candida overgrowth. My gastroenterologist picked up on the bloating during a routine examination, said I shouldn’t have that much bloating, and had me take a short course of Xifaxin (10 days). It helped tremendously. Xifaxin is an antibiotic but targets the small intestine, isn’t considered systemic. It is commonly used for SIBO, particularly for traveler’s diarrhea. I don’t have diarrhea, I deal with constipation, but Xifaxin certainly killed off a lot of bacteria and my bloating really diminished. I’ve never taken an easier antibiotic; very little stress or side-effects from this one. Might be something to try. I wasn’t able to eat much yogurt at the time I took Xifaxin, so I increased my Acidophilus supplement, following the usual antibiotics protocol. I feel the Xifaxin gave me a good push towards improving my gut ecology. My gastroenterologist also told me that I might need to repeat the Xifaxin every few years given my slow upper GI motility. I haven’t needed to do that since I’m on SCD, thank goodness. I have a certain amount of bloating all of the time, I’ve learned to live with it. But if your mother also has slow digestive motility than she might benefit from the extra help Xifaxin can bring – just have her increase the probiotics and be careful with foods during the course and for a few weeks afterwards. All depends on what her doctors say, of course. Kim M. Guest guest
Thanks so much, all of you, for taking the time to reply. And Kim, I will definitely have my mom check out that antibiotic. She's been on several, but I don't believe she's ever tried that one. That could be extremely helpful. I already love this group! I wish that my mom knew how to use a computer; I think this group would be the saving of her, but I'll just continue to be the go-between and try to keep encouraging her.
