LAP RNY 1/30/02

very little...surgery for me was a rope thrown to a drowning man

1 - felt very comfortable with Dr. Harrington from the first time I

saw him

I definitely feel successful so far... 376 pounds lost in 17 months,

54 pounds to goal (20-30 will probably be taken off with plastics)

> 6) If you could do it over again, would you choose the same wls?

Why

> or why not?

I would definitely do it all again - my life is no longer dominated

by food (and sugar in particular); in fact, I now have a life

> 7) Have you had complications directly resulting from the wls? If

At about 4 months post-op, had a period of about 3 weeks where I

could not keep down solid foods, lost about 25 lbs (estimated) of

muscle due to cannibalization (wasn't doing shakes at the time)...

was scoped and doc found nothing wrong, said it was psychological...

doubted it at the time, but soon after I was able to eat again... I

tend to think of it now as my " divorce proceedings " from food

> 8) What co-morbidities did you have before wls? Do you still have

then: back/overall body pain, bonespurs, beginnings of high blood

pressure (140/100), severe depression (had begun planning my

suicide, was hospitalized, and hospital psychiatrist referred me to

my surgeon

now: still some back pain due to hanging pannus, no problems with

bonespurs, blood pressure 108/68 (in nov. of last year, at 400

pounds), 95% better with depression

I totally agree with Marjie. Any patients who actually believe this

crap have not done their research. This doctor is certainly pushing

his choice of WLS, which is a dangerous thing because he's not

considering the patient's eating habits. He certainly doen't have

the patient's best interest at heart. But, any surgeon who only

performs one type of WLS will obviously try to sell that procedure to

all his patients. If there's anything we as current and/or the

former morbidly obese people should know for a fact is that one size

does not fit all.

Oh, and I was never asked to forego red meat, except for the first 3-

4 weeks during the liquid/puree phase.

with meat - I was asked to forgo red meat for the first 6 -12 months

and did for 8 months. However I eat it regularly along with chicken,

turkey, fish and shellfish - and have no problems whatsoever...
