Guest guest
Hi there! It's great to hear of someone else with this craving - normal or not! I am 1.5 years post-op, have lost 138 lbs. and am 2 lbs. from my personal goal. More and more over the last year I have had an unbelievable craving for vinegary, pickled things; peppers, olives, etc. I've noticed that the less I like surgar, the more I enjoy pickles! I used to enjoy the occasional Spanish olive with pimento pre-op, but now I can go through a jar a week. I NEVER ate pickles pre-op and now I go crazy for garlic dill pickles (mostly the BaTampte brand). I still hate bread n butter pickles or sweet pickles, but leave me loose with a jar of banana peppers and by the end of the evening, they'll all be gone. In the evening, while watching TV or reading e-mail, I take a little paper cup full of banana peppers, a pickle and a couple of Spanish olives and I'm set for the night, snack-wise, and there's hardly any calories in them either (and I will usually drink the pickle juice left in the cup, too). Anyway, it's good to hear I'm not the only one with this crazy craving, but I do wonder why I have it. Charlene Open RNY 2/27/02 Dr. M. Guest guest
Dawn, Since my surgery 5 years ago, I felt everything is salty numerous times. This usually follows when I take my water pill and don't drink enought water. After craving salty food right after the surgerey, now everything is saltly to me. I hardly use salt in any of my food. Guest guest
I have noticed the same thing. I have also noticed that sometimes I will eat a food that previously was way too salty, and I can barely taste the salt. This has been happening for years, way before the surgery. I have just assumed that it is my body's way of telling me when I need salt and when I need to cut down. If things are too salty, I just don't eat them. If they are not salty enough, I add salt. This may not work for everyone but my blood pressure tends to be on the low side, so I worry more about passing out from low blood pressure than about retaining water from too much salt. I dehydrate very easily, so I have to be careful. My Dad is the same way, and he has been known to pass out from low blood pressure caused by dehydration. In that sense, low blood pressure can be as hazardous as high blood pressure. Guest guest
Hi, I have been lurking for 18 months -- You guys have always been able to answer my questions without me asking, however I find that I am having the same problem as Dawn --- everything I eat tast salty, even when I lick my lips it tast like salt, I touched my tongue to my finger and it too was salty. I have also found that my potassium is low, my calcium is low and although my B-12still in range (the low end)my PCP wants to start B-12 shots. I guess I was stunned into writing when I saw Dawn's post looking me in the face like a mirror!!! Does any one have the answer? ww14615 Dr. O'Malley 1/10/02 289/151/140??or more > > > > > I don't know about the vinegar but when I am having a craving for salty > > stuff, pickles and soy sauce are usually somewhere on my list. Guest guest
according to Ediets.comUK, salt cravings are a sign of low calcium. they suggest upping your calcium intake both with foods and supplements. sue
