Guest guest
Dear Buds, Yesterday was a real eye opener for me. One of my best friends finally got to have her lap roux en y. I had mine 2.5 years ago, and my life has changed dramatically. She has fought like a wild cat to get this surgery; and yesterday she had it. Her co-morbidities scared me. She has out of control diabetes, sleep apnea, progressive renal failure, etc. She is an incredibly talented person and was even teacher of the year for the entire Oklahoma City Public Schools (large urban district). I have been proud to be her boss at three different schools and friend for many years. And so yesterday, I sat with her for four hours while we waited for her surgeon to finish other emergency surgeries that appeared at the last minute. She was calm. I was frantic. I have been at this long enough to know that some people do not live through this... a small percentage, actually... but not a small percentage if you are that person or someone who loves that person. For the first time, I witnessed what those who had been reticent about me getting the surgery. For the first time, I felt the red hot fear of what we are doing... the fear of those first problemmatical days, weeks, months that come post surgery. Sheesh...I would have forced a cancellation of the surgery if I weren't so sure that she would become incapacitated and face an early death without the surgery... but I don't want to lose her today... She appears to have come out of the other side and doing well. She passed her initial leak test and then another one today. I am in constant prayer for her. And now, let's all thank our friends and loved ones who saw us through this surgery... it's no easy row to hoe. smooches, Okie 11/28/00 lap roux en y (J.K.
